Spring break ended nearly three weeks ago but the great memories remain. During the first week of break, my family went to Florida for a scheduled high school spring break for the last time. This being known, my parents made the experience one I will never forget. While lying on the beach and going to fancy dinners and endless trips to Publix made the trip awesome, the best surprise happened on our last day. Little did I know the Salvador Dali Museum was just 20 minutes away, but better than that they were having an exhibit with the great Frida Kahlo’s works. This became probably my one and only time in my life I became so overcome with excitement that I cried.

Okay, time for a backstory- I first saw my first Frida Kahlo art piece in Mrs. Karmel’s Spanish class. I fell in love with the way she only painted herself to which I found a quote of her saying, “I am my own muse.” Frida had many complications in her life. She had and lost love many times but also got into a terrible, life altering bus accident. This accident caused her to break her back and pelvis and have a steel bar pierce her abdomen. And she lived. She carried out her life the best she could and by being bed ridden, she found art. Spending countless hours in bed with a mirror so she could paint herself into beautiful pieces that are now renown.

My favorite piece by Frida is named The Broken Column. This piece depicts Kahlo as having a broken column as a spine and having pins and needles desperately trying to repair the column. This one spoke to me due to the fact I’ve also had back problems that I never thought I could recover. Frida shows the true resilience found in the human spirit and can teach us all how to overcome our biggest obstacles.

Fastforward to now. I’m in her exhibit. Seeing her true works. The things she touched, she painted, and created. I became quickly overwhelmed. Then I saw the real Broken Column painting. I cried. I felt as if Frida was standing right next to me. This became the only time I ever felt truly moved by an art piece. This experience made me realize why I had such a childlike wonder for art for so many years. Seeing her art up close also gave me a spiritual awakening for why I create art. I do it to tell a story. It should no longer be just to get a grade in a class but to show the world your true feelings to the world.

It’s wonderful that you got to see the beautiful paintings that Frida has painted. I can understand how she is an inspiration through her art because of all her life struggles. Hopefully someday you’ll have the opportunity to be an art inspiration just like her, your art is beautiful. Great article.
