When people think of online dating, you think of swiping left, swiping right, dinner dates, or maybe even living happily ever after. Newsflash, there isn’t always a happy ever after, especially in the depths of the internet. Islam Mitat felt the exact opposite of happy when online dating led her to becoming the Bride of ISIS.
I watched the interview in which Mitat described the horrid and scary situation she experienced for over two years. Her interview along with commentary help display ISIS in its true colors, not as they depict through ads and descriptions. I attached a link to her interview at the bottom. I hope this brings more awareness on the dangers of ISIS and submitting yourself to online dating in general.

Mitat went from dreaming of a successful career as a fashion designer from Morocco to married to an ISIS soldier. This all happened with a few clicks on Muslima.com and various dates with a man that “seemed” normal. After many online encounters, Ahmid Khali traveled to Morocco to marry Mitat. Mitat said “he was a normal person.” She never suspected anything when he made her exchange her tight jeans and t-shirts for long flowing dresses.

After they stated their vows and officially were wed, things took a turn for the worst. As a couple they traveled to Dubai and then Jalalabad in Afghanistan. Mitat believed it to be a visit, but Khali had separate intentions. She was officially Khali’s wife and had to submit to wherever he took her. They could only stay in Afghanistan for a month before security reasons forced them out. This is when the situation took a turn for the absolute worst.

She was tricked into going to the border between Syria and Turkey for “holiday” and ended up being stuck. After arriving in Syria, her husband was sent to war as quickly as they had arrived. He was killed while fighting at Kobani and left behind a now pregnant wife. Instead of leaving, Mitat was forced by ISIS to remarry and stay with two separate men. She had a second child with her third husband while living in Raqqa and described the living conditions very harshly.

She says she was “always scared, always hearing bombs, guns, shooting.” and described it as not living, like you’re already dead. After losing her third husband to ISIS antics, she grew extremely eager to get out, escape, and keep her children safe. She decided it was time to take action and leave when ISIS kept her husband’s death a secret. SHe began by selling anything and everything they owned to save enough money to be smuggled out. The YPG, People’s Protection Unit, helped her escape with her two year old son and ten month old daughter. The family is now staying in a YPG safe house in northeastern Syria.
