What I’m about to say may not seem as fun or as important to some people, but it is, in many ways, both to me. Everyone is different; therefore, everyone likes spending time doing different activities, and something that I really enjoy to do is going fishing with my dad. Now, last year if someone would have asked me if I liked fishing at all, I most likely would not have had the same answer. I unfortunately didn’t catch very many fish last year. AT ALL. It’s strange though because last year we went fishing about ten times more than we have gone this year so far and I’ve still caught more fish this year than I did last year. My dad and I have gone fishing two times this year and I’ve already caught 17 fish including thirteen bluegill, one blue catfish, and three channel catfish.

Now, the fish that I have just named off may seem like pretty basic fish, and fishing with minnows the bluegills were definitely expected, but catching two different kinds of catfish with minnows seemed crazy to me because after I reeled them in my dad explained to me how yes, catfish like minnows, but people generally don’t catch them with minnows. This particular night though, my dad also caught a channel catfish. It was crazy that we were both catching catfish, but neither of us had any kind of complaint at all.

Fishing, whether I am catching anything or not, has always been something that my dad and I like to do together. It’s “our thing” that we wait through all of Indiana’s crazy weather for. I remember the first fish that I ever caught as if it was yesterday. I was, as you could probably guess, fishing with my dad. I had my little barbie fishing pole and a miniature lawn chair. I knew I had a fish so I was reeling it in and my dad didn’t think that I had one, but when I reeled in that bluegill, I was happy and my dad was surprised. Ever since that day my dad and I have just continued to go fishing together and chose to call it “our thing.”

To me fishing is a great. It’s a great way to relax, have a good time, and spend time with the people that are most important to you all at once. My dad and I have a lot more fun with fishing than I feel like most people do. A lot of people take things really seriously, but we like to goof around and just have a good time together. We might get a little competitive with each other sometimes and try to catch more fish than each other, but we still encourage each other and make it all worthwhile.

All that I am really trying to get across here is how important it is to give yourself a break to spend time with the ones you love no matter how you choose to do that. The way I do this just happens to be fishing with my dad and I wouldn’t trade that time I spend fishing with him for the world.

Great article Lanie! Im glad you enjoy fishing and get to spend that quality time with your father. I agree that it is a great way to cope with stress because it gives you a chance to get away from everything. People stress on a daily basis so it’s good that you have a way to deal with that. It is always good to spend time with loved ones!

I’ve never went fishing, and I’ve always wanted to. It sounds like such a great activity to just relax for a bit. I really liked how you described fishing with you dad as “our thing”. It sounds like you get along with your dad very well which is not a matter of course. I hope for you that you will continue doing these fishing trips with your father, and I really enjoyed your story!
