Braxton Shidler is my older brother.  He is 27 years old and lives in Greenwood, Indiana.  He is a registered nurse who works in downtown Indianapolis.  He has such a busy schedule at work with long and strange hours that it is sometimes hard to find the time to socialize and meet people.   He decided to use an online dating website and ended up finding the love of his life.  After meeting and talking, they have been inseparable since.   He has been dating Ellen McHugh for almost a year and a half now.

Braxton and Ellen soon realized what a small world it is.   They realized they had lived right across the street from each other in Bloomington previously however, had never met.  Ellen’s cousin had also lived right next door to Braxton in Castleton, but they had never met either.

The first time we met Elle, we were helping to move Braxton to a new apartment in Greenwood.   As soon as we met her, we knew she was great for him. She has an amazing personality, is very helpful, and beautiful.  We could tell by the way he treated her and looked at her that this girl was the one.  It was no surprise to hear that he was going to propose.  This past Friday, August 4, 2017, was the big day and a new beginning for their relationship.

Ellen’s mom is a wedding planner and helped Braxton plan a special way to propose.  A scavenger hunt was planned with the engagement ring being inside a book in the final step of the hunt.  They told Ellen that it was to help her cousin with a project for one of her college classes.  They had someone following them to videotape the event which Ellen thought was also part of the class assignment for her cousin.  Meanwhile, while they were on the scavenger hunt, many of their friends and family met at a restaurant on Mass Avenue in Indianapolis near where the proposal was to take place.  The videographer texted Ellen’s mom quite often to let her know where they were so that we would have an idea of when they would arrive at the restaurant.  All of  a sudden, the video arrived of Braxton on one knee.  We knew it would not be long before they would get there.  We were so excited!

Ellen’s parents, my parents and I waited outside the restaurant to meet them.  Ellen thought they were just going out to dinner after the scavenger hunt/proposal.   She had no idea we were all there.   As they crossed the street, she saw us waiting.  By the look on her face, everyone could tell she was very surprised. The proposal was a very special, emotional moment.  We spent a few minutes hugging and crying before we went in the restaurant.  We then walked them through the restaurant to the private room where everyone was waiting.  Ellen was in awe again at how full the room was.  Everyone cheered and was so happy for them.  We had appetizers and drinks and many tears, laughs, and stories were shared throughout the night.  The night could not have been more perfect.

An article was recently written and published in the Pharos Tribune and the Anderson newspaper about their love story and how they met using online dating.  It included a nice photo of the couple that had been taken while they were at Disney World.  Braxton and Ellen’s story proves that it does not matter how you meet someone, it is only important that it happened.
