The Lewis Cass boys cross country team finished 5th at the first annual Graf Memorial Invitational. The scoring varsity members included Bailey Scott in 2nd place with a time of 17:52, Hayden Vest in 23rd place with a time of 19:15, Carl Jay in 28th place with a time of 19:33, Brody Brooks in 33rd with a time of 19:53, and Bryce Hagen in 36th with a time of 20:01 while the 6th and 7th varsity runners were David Woolover in 37th with a time of 20:11 and Hunter Mundy in 49th with a time of 21:00. This effort earned the varsity 5th place behind Western, Logansport, Maconaquah, and Kokomo.

When asked how he thought the Lewis Cass boys raced, head coach Don Bonsett replied, “We still have a lot of work to do to be where we should be this part of the year.”

The Kings, who lost two varsity runners last year, Nolan Sharpless and Cail Brown, to graduation, need a few of the younger teammates to step up and fill in their spots. Five new freshman and a the returning sophomores from last year will compete for the last of the varsity spots.

Bailey Scott said, “I’m very excited to get in 2nd place in this big of a race. I’m just going to keep trying to get faster as the year goes on.”

The Junior Varsity Lewis Cass Boys ended the morning with a first place finish. JV runners included Erik Mayorga in 56th with a time of 21:09, Blaine Rudd in 59th with a time of 21:21, Samuel Miller in 61st with a time of 21:35, Nolan Young in 66th with a time of 21:46, Quinton Walker in 91st with a time of 24:48, and Lennon Perdue in 96th with a time of 26:15. The JV defeated all other teams on the night to earn their victory at the first annual Graf Memorial Invitational.

Asked how he thought the JV did, Samuel Miller said, “I just tried the best I could to one of the varsity runners, but I am excited about winning the JV race.”

The Kings will run at North Miami on Tuesday as they hope to repeat and win the invitational again. This would be the team’s second team win on the year as they defeated Twin Lakes and North White on the previous Tuesday to start out the year.
