Last weekend, the Marching Kings woke up at 3 a.m. to head to a competition. The competition was Bands Of America which is a contest held all across America. Multiple competitions are held so schools don’t have to travel all across the U.S. The Kings had to compete against many different bands in their class, Class 1A. Their competition, being held at 7 in the morning, was long and grueling.

After this competition we headed to the Greenwood mall. We were provided with a mighty big breakfast, and then allowed to shop in the mall. A couple of friends and I shopped around, and all of us fit ourselves into a photobooth (there were six of us). Once we were finished there, we were given a rest time in the Whiteland gym. Our next competition that day would be held at this school.

Once rest time was over, the band was provided supper and then had to perform. Having already performed once, it seemed like a breeze going through it again, this time fixing previous mistakes. We knew, after stepping off of that field, that we had won the competition. We were all too tired at that point to care. It was only an invitational and we were already excited, since we had just been told beforehand that we had won BOA.

After finishing the competition at Whiteland, we hurried onto the buses and headed back to Lucas Oil Stadium for a final performance and awards. The performance was the best of the day. Standing on that field after performing was, to say the least, one of the best feelings in the world.

The next day while I was at home, (procrastinating from homework as usual) I looked up scores for other BOA Class 1A champs. After I had found all of the champion scores I wrote them down and, to my surprise, had found that Lewis Cass scored highest in their class with a score of 75.45. Not only had we won our competition but we had beat every other band in our class’ score.

I have been told before that I’m not the class that impressed someone enough to get our band into Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. I totally agree with that, but last weekend proves that we are still just as good as before. We earned that trip through hard work and dedication and this year we are finally proving that we are the best. We are improving so much more this year than last and have pushed ourselves further than any other Lewis Cass band before.
