This past Saturday at Decatur Central High School, The Marching Kings took on the 2017 ISSMA Semi-State Competition. It was another early morning with call time being 5 a.m., but each member came prepared to fight the cold. We knew we were going to have to be very precautious of the cold because how it can affect our sound, so we spent a good time in the morning rehearsal to make sure every band member knew where to tune their instrument to so it would match the pit. Once we finished working out all the technicalities of what might need to happen at this competition due to the weather, we finished the rehearsal strong and ready to take on Decatur.

Many people were on high nerves because of the uncertainty of making it to State Finals because Greenwood, a Class A Band, who had a record as almost as lengthy as ours, did not make it on to State Finals last season. This means no one is guaranteed a spot in State Finals. We were fourth to perform so we had to make a lasting impression on the judges so we could make it on to State Finals. We did just that and are a State Finalist for the 2017 ISSMA State Competition.

The competition is stiff. We have to go up against competitors who have the same State Competition experience as the seniors in our program. This week will be tough, but we have to perfect our show because we don’t have any more second chances. Time is the enemy right now and we will tackle it with staying focused and fighting all the way to the end.  We plan on working harder for everything we want to achieve this Saturday and prove that hard work truly does pay off. I personally have nothing but respect and love for every member of my band family because nobody will know how hard we have worked for this except for us. This will be the last run for this group of band members as a whole, and the end goal becomes closer and closer.
