Today it seems as though almost every television channel is overrun by some sort of medical or crime show. Although these shows contain a wide variety of plot summaries, they seem to become redundant rather quickly. Whether it is the beloved Grey’s Anatomy or NCIS: Los Angeles, millions of people will still tune in each week to catch the latest episode. Thanks to FOX’s newly released show 9-1-1 I can say with confidence that we have broken free from this same cycle.
9-1-1 is a fast-paced high energy show that follows the lives of paramedics and first responders. It shows major insight to the lives of paramedics, firefighters, and police officers responding to emergency 911 calls in the Los Angeles area. Unlike other crime shows, the 9-1-1 dispatcher in this show is a major character and vital asset to the story line. Each episode contains the actual 9-1-1 call that contains real life panic. It is almost as if the emergencies are real. So far the emergencies have been anything but normal. A runaway bounce house and a roller coaster stuck upside down are just a few of the emergencies shown so far.
Aside from the emergencies, the show goes in great detail about the first responders’ and dispatchers’ home lives. 9-1-1 dispatcher Abby Clark lives a sad and lonely life. She is a 42 year old single woman who would rather spend her time at work taking emergency calls than at home struggling to take care of her mother who has been diagnosed with alzheimer’s. Clark is struggling to keep her head above water at home with her mother but remains laser focus at work when it matter most. Another major character is police officer Athena Grant. Grant’s home is crumbling beneath beneath her. Her husband of many years and the father of her two children admits he is gay. The children can even sense the problems arising between the two parents. How will this impact the children as the season progresses? Even though Grant is brave and fearless while at work, her home life troubles can seem to impact her job in a few ways. The first three episodes have shown Grant getting too emotionally involved with the cases she is assigned, especially with male victims. She is usually known for her no nonsense attitude and laser focusness. Will her home life struggles her job as well?
Although 9-1-1 has only been aired on tv for three weeks, it has already grabbed my attention for good. I would highly recommend this show to anyone who loves a fast-paced and high energy show. If you are tired of what seems like the same old shows, 9-1-1 is a good refresher. 9-1-1 airs on Wednesday nights at 9 p.m. on FOX.
