My Friend Dahmer, starring Ross Lynch, goes in depth about the strange life of the infamous serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer in his adolescence that led him to become the monstrous individual the world knows him as. When I saw that this movie was coming out, I became really excited to watch it because the twisted acts of serial killers interests me and I did a research paper on Jeffrey Dahmer a few years ago, so I knew My Friend Dahmer had to be an interesting movie to watch. However, I expected the depiction of his life as a serial killer; instead, the movie shows all of his life leading up to his rage of killing sprees. As a matter of fact, the movie ends just before he killed his first victim. Although it was a little different than I expected it to be, I thoroughly enjoyed this movie because it was based on true events and it allowed its audience to watch a serial killer in the making up close and in detail.

As most people have heard of Dahmer, he is one of the most infamous serial killers known to the world, openly admitting to murdering seventeen men. However, what most people don’t know is how he became the way he was. Obviously for a person to kill another person he has to be a little off, but Dahmer was more than just a little off. He was an estranged, heartless individual.  My Friend Dahmer does an exceptional job at describing, in detail, what brought him to become a horrible monster. Between his natural obsession with bones, his difficult homelife, and getting made fun of at school, he was bound to snap at some point.

Dahmer had a rocky homelife due to his parents’ constant fighting, which eventually led to a divorce and abandonment of their son. On the other hand, he was far from abandoned at school. Craving attention from his peers, Dahmer began acting out by pretending as if he were mentally handicapped and having random “spasms” for attention. Although he thought his “friends” were laughing with him, they only used him for a good laugh and someone to ridicule. Outside of his home and school life, his main hobby was collecting roadkill and dissolving it in acid for the bones. He had an enormous obsession and curiosity with bones and the insides of animals, which progressed into his desire to kill people.

All of these factors are what led the once innocent child to become one of the world’s most infamous serial killers. My Friend Dahmer is a must watch, interesting yet creepy movie to watch for anyone who is interested in the inhumane, odd acts of a person who is bound to become a serial killer.
