“A dog is the only thing on earth that loves you more than he loves himself.”– Josh Billings

To most people, you may have been just a dog, but to me, you were my best friend. When Dad first brought you home, you were scared. You sat next to him and didn’t move an inch; this is kind of ironic because after that, you never stopped moving. The first time I saw you I knew you were special; I knew you were a gift from something higher up. You have been with us since the beginning, and now I have to find a way to continue on without you.

Anytime I would walk into dad’s house, you always met me at the door. Your hips were giving out towards the end of your life, but you still managed to jump on me each time I entered the house. I walked into dad’s house the other day, and you didn’t meet me at the door. You didn’t lay with me on the couch, and you didn’t beg me for an ice cube when I stood at the fridge. All of these things that you used to do didn’t happen, and it finally hit me that you were gone. The empty tubs of ice cream next to my bed do not comfort me the way you once did, but someday soon, I hope finally to be at peace with your passing.

Someone once said diamonds were a girl’s best friend, but I don’t believe that for a second. Growing up, you became my best friend. From watching movies together to sharing popcorn, you never left my side. You were always there to comfort me when I was upset or calm me down when I was angry. You never failed to put a smile on my face, and now I have to learn how to get through this without you. I would give anything to curl up to you on the couch again.

I remember waking up every morning to you breathing in my face. You had snuck your way upstairs and were looking for a place to lie down. Even though dad would yell at me, I always made room for you and let you lie next to me. I will never get to lie next to you again. Friday was my last chance to do that, and I never left your side. I couldn’t believe that the end was near. For as long as I can remember, you had been there.

I walked into dad’s house the other day, and you didn’t walk up to me. That’s when it finally hit me that you were gone. I still walk into dad’s house hoping to see you, but you were at the end of your life. Everyone keeps telling me that you’re in a better place and no longer in pain, but now I’m in pain. I didn’t know losing my best friend would hurt this much, but I can’t go a single day without crying over the loss of you. You came into my life and left a mark on my heart that will always remain.

Bubba Jack, I miss you so much. I wish I could pet you one last time and cuddle up next to you as I watch Netflix. You were taken from me, from all of us way too soon. I hope doggy heaven treats you with pig ears and ice cubes. You deserve a moment of happiness and healthfulness. You will forever be my best friend, bubs. Until I see you again, Jack.

This article touches my heart! My dog, Mac, just turned two and I couldn’t imagine losing him. The pathos used in this article catches the reader’s emotions because most readers have pets of their own. Dogs are a man’s best-friend but I would say they are girls too! I hope you are doing okay. I’m sorry for your loss but I’m glad you shared your story. Great, heart warming article Kirstyn!

I could never imagine losing my dogs. They have been a part of my life for so long. It was really impacting to hear your point of view. It’s really sad when you lose a member of your family.
