Gun control is the set of laws or policies that regulate the manufacture, sale, transfer, possession, modification, or use of firearms by civilians. Many people disagree with the second amendment, which is the right to bear arms. With all of recent homicides happening that involve guns, people have begun to protest them in many ways.

Just last Wednesday, February 14th, a school shooting occurred at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida. The shooter used an AR-15 assault rifle. The shooting suspect has been identified as a 19-year-old by the name of Nikolas Cruz. He was captured about an hour later in Coral Springs, located about a mile away from the shootings.

Another recent shooting occurred in Las Vegas during a concert. This shooting was also very tragic. On October 1st, 2017, a gunman opened fire on a crowd at a concert at the Route 91 Harvest music festival on the Las Vegas Strip in Nevada. This resulted in 58 people killed and 851 injured. The shooter was identified as 64-year-old Stephen Paddock. He fired more than 1,100 rounds into the crowd. The police later found him dead in his room from a self-inflicted gunshot to the head.

individuals share different opinions on how to keep tragedies like these from happening again. I personally think that gun control and abolishing the 2nd amendment or taking guns away from Americans would be pointless. To put it into perspective, drugs are illegal in the United States. Even though they are, people all over the country have access to drugs. I feel like abolishing the second amendment would just open up the black market for gun needs. Also, this would mean that the people who use guns for protection and lawful scenarios would no longer have access to them; however the people who want to use them to rob and kill would. This is why I think it would be the wrong thing to do.

Recent discussion on teachers in Alabama has said that they should be able to carry a weapon to protect their students from possible intruders. I do not think this is a bad idea but I do think it should be discussed and explored more. There are many veterans that have been trained to serve and protect that are jobless, all around America. This would be a perfect job for them. Not only would we be protecting the children of America, but we would be offering jobs to those who have risked their lives for our country’s freedom. This is a win-win situation.

Overall, I believe gun control is not the answer to keeping tragedies like these from happening again.  But certain measures can be put into place to help protect and minimize the results. However, this does not address the root cause on why people want to do these horrific acts.  I feel we as a society need to better understand why people people are doing these things and then find ways to change for the better.

You and I have shot guns together, and we were raised around this stuff. There’s a difference, to me, in the respect that killers have for guns and lives. I respect guns, I know what they can do, and I respect other people. I don’t point guns, loaded or unloaded, at anybody. I use them to harvest animals and shoot other objects, but never to harm people. I agree Gabe, gun control isn’t the answer. Great article of a very controversial topic.

Nice article, Gabe. I agree with your stance on gun control. Drugs are plaguing America and are widespread, so what will stop guns from becoming the same way. Either way, people will get their hands on illegal things. Guns can never be fully banned. I hope lawmakers find another means of stopping the shooters. Overall, I believe your argument was well stated.

Great article Gabe. Gun control is a big topic in politics today and is something that needs addressed. People do not understand what you said about criminals acquiring guns no matter what the laws say. Banning guns would only make the law abiding citizens defenseless and unable to use them for things such as hunting. Your point about having veterans help protect the schools may be one of the best ideas I have heard in a while. I strongly agree with your article.
