The Marching King seniors rode a bus together as a marching band one last time as they traveled down to the Indiana State House to be recognized for winning the Class C ISSMA State championships back in November. The Kings received recognition from both the Indiana State Senate and the Indiana State House of Representatives.

The Marching Kings have twenty-two seniors, including myself, and all but two of them accompanied Mr. Muth, Mr. Hinshaw, and Hope Turcheck to the state house to receive praise for our hard work.

The seniors arrived to the statehouse around one o’clock in the afternoon on President’s day. We planned to have our meeting with the senators and representatives around two. However, we had to wait quite a while since many other groups, such as the Delphi FFA, were also getting recognized for their accomplishments. Finally, we headed into the senate chamber for our recognition. The directors and twenty-two seniors stood in front of all the Indiana State senators as Senator Randy Head stood in front of us and talked about our accomplishments.

Many of the senators nodded in approval of our eight state championships, thirty-six consecutive year streak attending state finals, our Class A Bands of America Championship, our participation in the Macy’s Day parade and other travels, and of course our 2017 State Class C Championship. Some of the senators even asked to see our rings as we were standing there. The experience excited most of us- I don’t think any of us knew what to expect, but the outcome was more than hoping.

After exiting the senate chamber, we literally walked to the other side of the building and entered the house chamber to be recognized in almost the same way in front of a different group of people. This time they had Mr. Muth speak and say some things in front of them. All the representatives showed great respect and seemed honored to have us there. They even mentioned that they wanted us to come and play our instruments for them; we figured it might be difficult to fit our entire 100 person hornline inside the small room we were in and play our very loud show.

The day as a whole reminded all the seniors how hard we worked for all of our accomplishments. Being on the bus with all my best friends gave me a little sweet nostalgia of the many many hours spent perfecting the show and working with my classmates to create our masterpiece of a show. Being a state champion band has given our program many opportunities this being one of them! Hopefully many more to come.

I definitely don’t think the Lewis Cass band will be able to fit. There’s just so many! That’s awesome that you guys got the opportunity to travel to the statehouse to be recognized. You all deserve it! Great article.
