Have you ever wanted a crash course in everything adulting? Well myself and my fellow seniors got to experience just that last Friday when we all attended senior reality day. Our economics teacher Miss. Smith put on this event for all the seniors to do anything from interview for a job to change a tire and a whole lot of life lessons thrown into the mix as well. The senior class got all dressed up and took off on a bus to the First Baptist Church in Galveston for a day full of adulting.

As we arrived to the church, every student was handed a schedule custom to their interests based on a survey we filled out earlier in the month. My schedule was mostly directed towards college prep and how to be prepared for all that college throws at me. One of my favorite classes during the whole day was the college reality class and it was taught by two Cass graduates: Dalton Key and Jael Forker. They got real about what college is all about and what they learned in their first year. We covered anything from buying books to Greek life and I have more peace of mind about walking into college this fall. I now feel more educated from a student perspective in a way I didn’t before. College professionals like to use a lot of complex examples to make their college seem the best but Jael and Dalton didn’t sugar coat anything. They were real about their struggles and successes in college and it benefited everyone who took the class.

My second favorite class was the class about how to change a tire. Now, this may seem like a simple class that anyone’s dad could teach them, Jason McClain taught more than just changing a tire. He taught us important life lessons about life throwing us unexpected obstacles and how to handle them.

“When you get a flat tire, I promise you it will probably be raining, you’ll be running late, and ladies you’ll probably be wearing a dress.”

He taught us how to make the best of this unfortunate situation and many more, and with me being the only girl in the class he taught me how to protect myself while changing the tire. Jason encouraged us to go for our dreams and do everything we want to do in life while we can. He encouraged us to avoid debt but also get an education in something we are passionate about. He asked us the question, “If every job paid $10 an hour, what would you do?” and after we all answered, he told us that our answer is what we should do because choosing a career for money is choosing to be unhappy.

Overall, the senior reality day helped me feel more confident going into college. I know important life hacks that I didn’t know before and I feel encouraged to go after my dreams. While practicing for real life through interviews and changing tires the senior reality day prepared my class to walk across the stage, accept our diplomas, and take on the world.

Sounds like a fun day! I took Economics online so I wasn’t asked to attend this; however, it sounds like you guys had a great time and learned a lot about moving on into the adult world. Great job!
