Lewis Cass Boys Varsity Track Coach Jeff Jones has been the head coach of the team for 11 years. Back in 1979, he started his first year coaching football. This would’ve been about 15 years after football started. Eventually, he’d move onto coaching wrestling soon after. He wrestled in high school, which led to it being his favorite sport to coach here at Lewis Cass. He also enjoys football as his son and himself both played. The 2018-2019 season will be his 40th year coaching, and it will serve as an outstanding memory for him and his family. Coach Jeff Jones has led as an outstanding example of a great coach over the years. He continually pushes his athletes to do their best and work as hard as they can

When I asked him about the school’s most popular sport he had a lot to say. He always explains that he likes wrestling more, but he said: “I enjoy football almost equally, and I had a passion for football over the years.”  I think he’s grown to know a lot of players over the years and made some great relationships with other coaches and staff members. Jeff Jones has coached a lot of star athletes and learned how to make the perfect team whether on the field, track or on the mats. His most memorable moment as a coach was when he took his son to the state finals in wrestling in 2006.

What do you enjoy most about coaching? This is one of the questions that I wanted to know the answer to, not just being a plain interview question. “Working with young men, and having the opportunity to be apart of their life. Hopefully instilling something into them that would be a life lesson,” he said. I definitely think that he has taught me some life lessons. Getting your work done and doing the right thing even when nobody’s watching is what he always emphasizes. He values integrity the most in a player. Having integrity allows a person to go a long way in life, and it makes them a more acceptable person in society. Integrity can lead anyone down a successful path and gain them a lot of friends along the way.

I think Coach Jones has been a very inspirational coach to many athletes over the years. He does a good job of getting people to do their work at practice and prepare them for games or meets. Whether it’s having the whole team do sprints or practicing every day of the week, he gets the job done especially well. Each team he’s coached has done their best to have a great season and I’m sure that he stopped nothing short of that. Coach Jones has plans to make some noise at this year’s Track sectionals starting on May 17th.

Great article Caleb! I like the questions you asked him. It’s crazy that Coach Jones has been coaching for almost 40 years. I like how you said that he started coaching 15 years after football started.
