Imagine that it’s 2045. The world is in chaos and destruction. The depletion of fossil fuels has generated a worldwide energy crisis, leaving people stranded, not to mention how the rise in population can’t be supported by its resources and surroundings. Wars are everywhere, and there is no space to live. Everything seems hopeless.

Luckily, people have found salvation in the OASIS, a virtual reality universe created by James Halliday. Now, even though people can’t fit in the real world, everyone can go to school, start businesses and even get married inside the colossal world without using up dwindling resources.

When Halliday the creator dies, he leaves his immense fortune to the first person to find a digital Easter egg he has hidden somewhere in the OASIS, sparking a contest that grips the entire world.

When Wade Watts decides to join the contest, he studies Halliday’s whole life until five years later, he finds his clue. He is hurled into the treasure hunt through a fantastical universe of mystery, discovery, deceit, and danger.

Halliday loved the 80’s with a passion. Growing up in the time, he knew all of the games, movies, and tv shows that came from it. Searchers, therefore, have to study the time to learn all about hints to the Easter egg.

Wade Owen Watts (avatar name Parzival) is an orphan from metropolitan Oklahoma City. He names his OASIS character Parzival after the knight involved in the quest for the holy grail and dedicates his life to finding James Halliday’s Easter egg.

Aech (pronounced like the letter H) is Wade’s best friend, fellow gunter (avatar looking for the easter egg), and rival in the quest to find the egg. Art3mis is a famous female gunter and blogger. Wade has a huge cyber-crush on her, which is complicated by their competition in search of the egg. She chose her avatar’s name from the Greek goddess of the hunt.

A group nicknamed the “Sixers” is trying to claim the reward. Planning to add fees and rules to the world, most people will get kicked out of paradise. Those that can afford it will have no freedom to do what they want. The group has a plethora of money, people, and resources, putting pressure on everyone trying to save their only world.

When the virtual fight takes its toll in the real world with blackmail, cheating, and murder, the race to the finale becomes much more costly. Wade and his virtual friends Art3mis (pronounced Artemis), Aech, and Shoto are being hunted in their real lives.

With its mixture of intensity, quizzical nature, and action, Ready Player One is amazing to read and impossible to put down. The scenery and circumstances presented throughout the book make it easy to imagine with today’s technological advancements. Ready Player One is a great book that I would definitely recommend.
