How would you prepare for the biggest meet of your season? Would you listen to your favorite songs or maybe even sleep? Well, that’s how most of our track team prepared for sectionals. We arrived about 15 minutes before the meet start which left us no time to stretch. We grabbed our numbers and hoped for the best. Our team had already been prepared though. We discussed what we wanted to do and decided to make some noise. 80° with a cool breeze and the sun set us up for perfection. We did alright for the night, and I think it’s only a glimpse of what we have to look forward to next year.

We all performed well; however, we only have two moving on to regionals next week. Bailey Scott will be heading back to Kokomo High School next Thursday to run the mile. Last night he placed third in the mile with a time of 4:50. He also ran the 800m race and placed fifth with a time of 2:11. The competition looked tough in the beginning, but as the race went on, he really did his best. Bailey hopes to lower his time at regionals and get a pr (personal record.)

Our other regional qualifier was Brady Johnson. Originally, he thought his only shot to move on to regionals was in discus. He threw a 121’ in discus which didn’t make him very happy, but his shoulder had been hurting. The previous state champ won the event with a monstrous throw of 185’. After discus, we walked to shot put where Brady would go on to qualify for the regional. His first throws were good, and then he went on to throw a foot shy of his personal best. A throw of 46’ 5 allowed him to get third place.

On the track, we had our 4 by 4 team run a 3:49 to take 7th place in their race. The 4 by 1 team consisting of Jake McKay, Camden Winter, Roland Trusty, and Nate Jones got ninth. Senior Hayden Vest got 8th place in the 300m hurdles. Car Jay got eleventh in the 2-mile race and was in a 4-way tie for 9th place at pole vault. At high jump, Bailey got the 11th place finish with a jump of 5’ 6”. Camden had a jump of 19ft in long jump along with Jake who jumped 18’ 8’, and they combined for 10th and 14th respectively.

New mile runner Mack Appleton had a few words about his experiences with the mile last night, “I was happy with my time, and it was much better than I thought I’d get. I took a nap before, and I was really tired after I finished.” Running the mile last night allowed him to get Academic All-State. He was really excited about that, and it made the run that much more memorable for him.

I thought everyone had done their best throughout the year leading up to now. I was impressed with how we did, and I look forward to starting off with the guys next year that come back,” said head coach Jeff Jones.

I think we performed well, and we even had a good fan turn out. Over four hours we had racked up 20 points to place 11th in the sectional meet. Next year our team wants to grow in numbers and have a lot of our younger guys step up.
