This year the Lewis Cass FFA celebrated our 54th banquet on May twelfth. There were 51 members and 154 guests present. The FFA grilled pork chops and prepared various other food for the all the guests and members.

We had several members earn degrees this year. Starting with the Greenhand degree, the lowest of the degrees, we handed 29 members their paper with their degree on it up on stage. To earn a Greenhand degree, a member must be at least a freshman and must have an SAE (Supervised Agricultural Experience). Two members, Kyla Mennen and Mackenzie Hodupp, were selected as the Star Greenhands.

The next degrees handed out were the Chapter degrees. 18 members received their Chapter degrees this year. To earn the Chapter degree, members must have a Greenhand degree and must have a minimum investment of $150 into their SAE. Two members were selected to be the Chapter stars. Cole Appleton was a star in ag production and Hannah Young was a star in  ag placement. The Greenhand and Chapter degrees are both decided and given out by our FFA Chapter.

The Hoosier degree is given out by the state. Earning a Hoosier degree, members must have participated in five activities above the chapter level, have at least 25 hours of community service, and at least $2000 invested into their SAE. We had nine members who will be receiving their Hoosier degrees this June at the State FFA Convention. Jayla Woolington, Hayley Begley, Brooklynn Fye, Brooklyn Miller, Wyatt Helms, Miah Martin, Emily Goodman, McKenna Wolf, and Noah Miller all earned their Hoosier degrees this year. Noah Miller was the district V and section II star in agriscience.

The American is the highest degree a FFA member can earn and is given out nationally. In order to earn an American degree, members must have at least 50 hours of community service, five activities above chapter level, and at least $7,500 invested into their SAE. Brad Berlett will be receiving his American degree at the national FFA convention in Indianapolis in November.

Special Awards awards were given out during the banquet to members who exceeded normal involvement in the chapter. Joe Deeds received the Outstanding Service Award and Mallory Minnick won the DeKalb award. Kurt Elliott received the Golden Plow award. The Golden Plow Award is for hard workers in the chapter who do not always get the recognition that is due to them.

Three scholarships were given out to senior members in the chapter. Mack Appleton received the Minnick Family Scholarship for $1000, Taylor Collins received the Lauren Bashore Scholarship for $1000, and Noah Miller won the Young Farmers Scholarship for $500.

The FFA buys sashes for the senior FFA members to wear during graduation every year to show appreciation for their time at Lewis Cass. To earn a sash, members must have earned at least a Chapter degree. The members who received senior sashes this year were Mack Appleton, Noah Miller, Mallory Minnick, Westin Miller, Jeffery Day, Joe Deeds, Taylor Collins.

The banquet closed with the retiring officers leaving and installing the new officers into the 2018-2019 officer team.
