The Red Queen is the first of many books in the Red Queen series and it is also my favorite. The series follows Mare, a female character. In this series a character’s status, money, job, and even name is decided by your blood. Pretty similar to the world’s racial issues Isn’t it?  What makes having different colored blood so special? The difference is defined by the nearly thirty percent of the world having silver blood. Not only do they have strange colored blood, but they have supernatural abilities. Although everything was decided by whether or not your blood was silver or red, Mare seems to be one of the few exceptions in this world. Due to a public and worldwide demonstration of her abilities, the government is forced to cover up a red with powers.

After witnessing a strange power coming from a red, the silvers had decided to hide this red’s power to prevent any kind of uprising or revolt. Instead of hiding her existence in general, the silvers had another plan. They made a new identity for Mare, one that would make sense to the public eye. This new identity made her a candidate for royalty. A silver prince Maven, the youngest and second to claim the throne, is used as a way to keep an eye on Mare. This was disguised as a simple political marriage. Little did anyone know that the people in charge had different ideas. This is a demonstration of how the author can make unexpected twists and turns that not even the most experienced reader can predict. These developments will keep you saying the traditional “just one more chapter”, but you will find it hard to put the book down.

Everything seemed to be going as the royalty had planned. Although they had a slight understanding of Mare’s abilities, they still lacked the rest of the details. Mare had the ability to absorb and control electricity. Not only can she control it, but she can also “sense” it. She can feel the electricity running through the walls and even what kind of device is on the other side. It has become a kind of sixth sense to her. After discovering a government conspiracy to hurt someone that she loved, she realized that she had to act. Reconnecting to an old friend Mare decided to join the current and most powerful revolution, the scarlet guard.

From this point on, the royal government had different problems. Unknown to them, Mare used her abilities to sabotage a royal political gathering which allowed the scarlet guard easy access. Several political figures were assassinated in this incident which led to a full out war between the royal government and the scarlet guard. Mare must decide whether to choose between her feelings for the older prince or to side completely with the scarlet guard. After making her decision, Mare is on the run. Constantly trying to escape from the silvers and also finding many terrifying truths about the relation of silver and red blood, Mare continues to fight for what she believes is right and I admire that part of her. She has the power to bring a much needed change to the world and is even willing to put her life on the line to do so.
I recommend this book to anyone that likes either fantasy or action and characters that you can relate to. The writing style is simple and easy for anyone to read. I can recommend this book to anyone in high-school.
