October Third is a day I am looking forward to. I will be waking up at four a.m. that October day, which some would say to be dreadful but I look at it as exciting. I am excited about waking up tired as ever and trugging to the airport with my family before the sun has even risen. Something about boarding a plane at 7:10 a.m. really does bring out my sense of a fever pitch, maybe because of the adventure that awaits.

San Diego is where my family and I will be heading in October. The wait to leave has been quite the long wait, and my family and I are still counting down the seemingly indeterminable days. We have all made it through 78 days out of the 90 we have had to wait. I mean we have been through these long, dreadful, days but I believe we had all forgot about how snail like the time had gone by last year.

My family has yet another trip to San Diego to watch my oldest brother, Niles, graduate from the Marines. My other brother, Cy, having already graduated last year and now got to experience what it was like to wait these three months without anything aside from a letter from one of us four siblings. Growing up, all of us siblings were so close that now with all of us working and moving on with our lives, it is hard to be apart especially with one of us being across the globe! To say we miss Niles would be an understatement.

The time that Niles has been working his behind off, I have been working mine off as well. I have decided that working two jobs would not only help the time go faster until our trip to San Diego but also keep the cash flow coming for some extra spending money on the trip. I have been planning for this trip before Niles ever arrived in San Diego. I had to be ahead of my planning game with the San Diego trip as well as Niles and Sam’e’s wedding. Sam’e is Niles’ fiance who probably misses Niles the most out of all of us.

If I am not working or at school, I am usually with Sam’e helping her plan the wedding or simply hanging out and having a good time with her. I had always made the joke to Niles before he had left that I would be, ‘Mr. Steal Your Girl.’ That made Niles laugh all the time because he knew very well that Sam’e and I would really be together a lot, and we have been. A week has not gone by that Sam’e and I do not see each other. I am glad Sam’e and I spend the majority of our time together due to an exciting phone call Sam’e received last Saturday.

Last Saturday Sam’e and I had been sitting in my room booking our flights, which was very exciting. We had just finished booking everything and Sam’e received a text about the flights, but as we were reading the message, a call from California popped up on her phone screen. Having a feeling that the call could be possibly related to the plane tickets we answered. Neither of us had expected Niles to say, “Hello?”

Having not heard from Niles in over two months, Sam’e and I literally jumped with excitement and listened while Niles informed us the booking of his flight home. The call lasted a total of 14 seconds, Niles saying the exact words, “It’s Niles letting you know that I am booking my flight home, I love you.” Then before he could hang up, I yelled I love you again and he repeated, “I love you,” and ended with a ‘bye.’ That 14 second call had Sam’e and I dancing with excitement. Sam’e even said, “He sounded so happy!” That made her and I even more happy that we got that short phone call.

Now waiting is the hard part, knowing that Niles has booked a flight home makes this 10x more real. The time is ticking down while our excitement is bubbling just as fast if not faster. The upcoming graduation for Niles making it through boot camp cannot come any faster, but patience is key when it comes to having a military family.

October Third cannot come faster.
