“The thing about writing is I can’t tell if it’s healing or destroying me,” Rupi Kaur wrote in milk and honey. Occasionally a title of a book is capitalized unlike this special artist. None of her work is capitalized, even the work inside the book. Shocking, an artist publishing a book without anything but lowercase letters. With the emotions tied to this book, I believe she did this to emphasize the pain it took to write some of the poems entered in this book.

The quote I used to open this story has meaning to me. It relates in so many ways considering the fact I love writing, but some of my writing hurts to put on paper. I write things that are on my mind or even things that have happened to me. Sometimes, I cannot write because I do not want the experience to be real. As Rupi writes, the reader can relate to her writings.Every page tugs at a hidden emotion that you forgot you had. Every word, every page, and every experience makes this book all it is. With everything that is described through each of the four chapters, the readers might learn a few things about his/her self.

The chapters are based off life experiences. Everyone’s life experience is different, but one thing is that same. Everyone experiences pain, heartbreak, and loneliness. Even when you think you are alone, so many people around you feel the same way. Even if it is not in the same context. Rupi does an amazing job in explaining her pain she felt in that exact moment. Most people go through something traumatizing and they never want to look back, and others share their stories to help others know this pain is okay to accept as long as you do not get stuck on it.

Getting stuck on pain is easy. Yes, I know this might sound silly but we do it all the time. We ponder on what just happened to make ourselves realize it is real even when the minds cannot perceive that fact that it wasn’t just a scary dream. In the next two chapters she talks about other topic that helped her get back to a better life. She speaks to the people who are willing to love and help the wounded: the ones who stay with someone who is learning to trust, love, and grow as a person.

After falling down, getting hurt, and learning to stand up again, Rupi wants the reader to know how the healing process goes. The detail used to explain how frustrating it is to self love is mind boggling. I highly highly encourage people to read this book, not just because it is an easy read but because it is so touching. Learning to accept a past is hard to do when you do not want it to be real. This book helped me accept things that I couldn’t wrap my mind around. milk and honey was a great escape for a troublesome mind.

I read this book about a year ago and loved it. I agree it is heartbreaking at points but it is very good, as well as your article. Good job!

This article was very meaningful. Personally, this book has helped me through some rough times so I know the effect it can leave on someone. You described it very well, and I think many people don’t realize that their are more people out there who can be their voice in hard times. Good article!
