I recently visited San Diego with my family to attend the military graduation of my oldest brother, Niles. While I was super excited to see Niles, I was also excited to eat the food Old Town in San Diego had to offer. The food was all mainly based on Mexican dishes, and although I am not a fan of Mexican dishes, I did like a few places that served those delicious dishes.

A year ago we visited San Diego as well and the night we arrived all of us siblings went out to a restaurant called Fred’s Mexican Cafe. Freds was very Mexican dished based and I was not quite sure of what to get the first time I went there. I ended up getting these corn type of things that were big, round, and full of awesome flavors. I was not aware of what was in the corn things until this year when I went to Fred’s again. The round bites actually contained corn, chicken, rice, beans, and cheese rolled into panko bread crumbs.

I was so excited to have these corn things again that the whole plane ride there I was going on and on about how excited I was to have the food from Fred’s Mexican Cafe. At one point my sister-in-law asked if I was more excited to see Niles or the food…obviously I said Niles but the food came pretty close to first.

The first day we arrived in San Diego and checked into the hotel, I was ready to go eat at Fred’s Mexican Cafe. However, I did not get the change to eat there the first night we arrived. My family wanted to wait for all of us to go and eat as a family. I thought that was ridiculous at the moment because I just wanted those giant corn nugget looking things and I was starting to become hangry. Old Town is only a five minute walk from our hotel, and my impatient mind was just wanting that good food.

Finally, we made it to Fred’s a couple days after arriving in San Diego. When the waiter asked if I knew what I wanted, I immediately asked, “Do you have those corn bite type of things still here?” The waiter nodded and said, “We have the chicken chingaderas that have corn in them, they are hockey puck sized.” He explained the size of the chicken chingaderas to me as he held up his fingers to try and describe the actual size of the food.

When the waiter brought the chicken chingaderas to me, I was overwhelmed with excitement. They tasted so good and I was disappointed that I could not finish all of them, but only two of the five. I devoured the two that I could eat and savored the taste because the wait was well worth it for those amazing chicken chingaderas.

The chicken chingaderas were not the only great foods at Fred’s Mexican Cafe either. The burritos at this cafe were ginormous! I could not finish the chicken chingaderas and there were only five of them and comparing those to the burritos, it would take me days to finish off one burrito from Fred’s. The pricing at the cafe was not horrible either. I paid about $10 for my meal which is cheap for food in San Diego.

All in all I was very happy to discover that those giant corn nugget type of things were called chicken chingaderas and that they were as great as I remembered. I would definitely recommend going to Fred’s Mexican Cafe if one was to visit San Diego, Old Town.

I love this story! It is so cute and funny how you wanted the food so badly. I love Mexican food so if any time in the future I go to San Diego, I’ll make sure to stop by this restaurant.
