The day seemed oddly still to Joe. The air stood motionless and it felt as if time had stopped. As he walked to the utility shed to retrieve the shots and disks, Joe thought to himself “something bad is coming… I can feel it.” Joe clammereed on the bus with the runners and throwers. As they took their seats, Coach Jones began to take the roll call Joe sunk into his seat.

“Jay,” called Coach Jones

“Here,” yelled Carl

“Johnson… Caleb,” said Coach Jones

“Here,” shouted Caleb

“Johnson… Tyler,” called Coach Jones

“Here,” hollored Tyler

By the time Coach Jones got to Joe, he had his headphones in. Other than a raised arm in acknowledgement, Joe could not be bothered to give any notion that coach had his attention. As the Tracc Pupz made their way to Kokomo for the long awaited sectionals track meet, the calm outdoors started to cry. As the tears began to weap from the sky along the bus’s windows, the boys began to have premonitions of a cancelled track meet. The quiet tears of Mother Earth soon turned into a violent sob. The Pupz quieted their loud conversations, which sounded more like inaudible barks than any real language, to softer, duller tones so they could hear the cries of the earth.

Rolling into the the parking lot of the Kokomo track, the facility, that is designed to look like a castle, became superimposed over the darkening sky only to be lit up by a flash of lightning. The sight reminded the guys of Count Dracula’s castle! When the bus parked, Joe heard the coaches holler to stay put on the bus. They then departed from the bus into the storm. The darkness soon engulfed the coaches from the Tracc Pupz’s sight. The only consolation the boys received was the flash of lightning here and there to give them a glimpse into the lot.

The torrential rain slammed against the bus in waves. The bus would rock one way as the water pushed with the force of an awoken god; then, it would ease back as the force lightened. But, as soon as it went, it came back. In what felt like an oceanic wave, the bus began to tip to one side. Another flash of lightning gave light to what happened the Earth began to tremble and a crack opened up beneath the bus. Coupled with the sinkhole and the torrential downpour, the pupz’  best chance of surviving the night was a dash to the bathroom facilities.

As the pupz raced to the restroom, Sam Miller fell upon Roland Trusty’s arm. Sam’s nose started to bleed profusely. Without thinking, the boys helped each other up and continued the run. With the lightning flashing around them, the pupz finally made it inside the bathroom… successfully surviving the perilous journey in the rain.

BANG screamed the thunder, and with a jolt Joe woke up from his nap. He looked around furiously to make sure no one had any injuries. To his relief, the storm’s severity, a twisted fragment of reality, was only a dream. As the coaches walked back to the bus to announce the news, the storm dried up. When the coaches told the track team the the meet was canceled, Joe took great pleasure in the news. Although the storm caused the postponement of the meet, no sinkholes and no busses actually tipped over!

Because the meet was canceled, the boys had to venture back on Friday to participate. The Pupz had a few notable finishers with Caleb Johnson and Bailey Scott moving forward to Regionals!
