Life on the farm is a grueling task that doesn’t receive much recognition. Likewise, the small school of Lewis Cass takes acknowledgement whenever given. If you have been living under a rock, we, the Kings, have finally gotten our fifteen seconds of fame. The football team upset the overly hyped Pioneer Panthers in an epic football game. The win had to be credited to the masterful play calls by the head play caller, Coach Phillips. The Indianapolis Colts bestowed upon him the statewide honor of “Coach of the Week.” This award was carefully selected by a panel of experts and awards the winner $2,000 to the program and an invitation to a Colts game to honor Coach Phillips. However, Coach Phillips doesn’t want all of the credit; he said, “Anytime there is an individual award in football, individual awards are a result of team effort….”

Coach Phillips was awarded this achievement on Wednesday in the Cass auditorium in front of the entire football team by former Colts defensive back Mike Prior. The veteran NFL player has a 14-year tenure in the big leagues and has covered legends of the gridiron like Randy Moss, Jerry Rice, and Walter “Sweetness” Payton. His tales enthralled the young minds of our football team and sparked many questions from my peers. He told tales of growing up undersized and battling through adversity. He was cut from the Colts, but thanks to a little luck from a strike and the starter above him hurting his leg, he found his way into a starting roster. Given the opportunity, he created quite a career for himself. He boasts 45 career interceptions and even a Super Bowl ring during his stint with the Brett Farve led Packers.

This was a special week for the Lewis Cass Kings, and hopefully they can use the wise words of Mike Prior on their upcoming battle against Maconaquah. Hopefully, this will provide extra fuel in the tank for the long season ahead. We are proud of what our boys have accomplished, but the community is hungry for more. On to the next week!
