Mr. Young Interview
A big thank you to Mr. Young for taking time out of his busy day to let us interview him!
1 What is the main purpose of STEM ?
“The main purpose of STEM is to make stem and school apply more to your day and regular life.”
- About how many STEM activities do you plan on doing in a year?
“Well it’s not the activities, but we do one project for sixth, seventh, and eighth grade. We also need to try to incorporate STEM into your classes once a week.”
- How would you like to incorporate STEM into more of our curriculum?
“Each week the teachers have a meeting and they discuss what they have to do to incorporate Stem into our classes in a week.”
- How long did it take to get everyone on board with the idea to incorporate STEM into our
curriculum?
“The STEM program is a three year journey, and our goal is to next year apply to become a STEM certified school by the state.”
- What’s your next stem project idea for this year?
“Well, to be honest I don’t have any ideas yet. At the end of every year the teachers in each of the middle school grade levels will meet and decide on the STEM focus for that upcoming year.”
- How much money yearly do you spend on STEM related activities?
“Well, most of the money that is spent is through the state, and through grants that we earn from companies. We do have money that is put aside for extra supplies that we need to get for a certain project.”
- What is your favorite STEM idea that you have come up with so far?
“Well, I don’t really have a favorite, I am really proud of what the teachers come up with every year.”
- How do you think that STEM has positively affected the school?
“I think that when you look at the ILEARN results, the areas that we score low on every year is the realistic aspect of the test. The reason that STEM is helping with that is because the kids are learning to do things in more steps, and they are learning how to apply what they learn in school when they graduate and become an adult.”
