Girls Basketball Preview

Wayne Gretski famously said, “You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take.” This quote is especially true and hits home with our girls basketball team. The Lady Kings are sporting one of the worst losing streaks in the state with 19 losses and a record of 1-22 last season. However, the tide seems to be turning. Tuesday was the Lady Kings’ first contest this year and the score of 43-18 does not correctly represent the game. The team appeared as if they were going to pick up where they left off last season after only scoring 2 points in the first half. The girls seem afraid to pull the trigger on some shots and lack the intensity needed to keep the game close. Eastern is a very strong team and is looking to go far in the state tournament this year and it showed with a highlight reel of no-look passes and a couple of three-pointers. Their successful offense launched them into a comfortable lead for halftime.

The big difference between last year’s team and this year’s is coaching. The Lady Kings of old would’ve rolled over and let the other team pet their bellies. However, the Kings acquired one of the best girls basketball coaches in the state in the off season and it showed. The Lady Kings ran successful plays, got more shot on the glass, and showed a little more tenacity on the floor. Our girls played the taller, experienced Comets extremely tough the second half and kept the second half score to 17-16. The true measure of a coach is his halftime adjustments and Coach Amor showcased his hardwood knowledge.

The Lady Kings are destined for a better season this year. They have no seniors on the roster, so this young group just needs time to develop. The Lady Kings will get more confident and team will start respecting the red and navy blue. We have the proper coaching, a young, excited roster, and the hunger for a great season. I am looking forward to the first steps forward to the building of a dynasty.
