Kings Take Down Berries in County Championship

The Lewis Cass boys’ basketball team knocked off Logansport last Friday to win the Cass County Tournament. Logansport had an 11 year county winning streak going which they hoped to continue. However, the Kings had other plans and fought for the win until the final buzzer. Logansport kept the game close, but the Kings drained their free throws down the stretch to seal the game.

Cass won with a final score of 52-45. Easton Good finished the game with 20 points. Tyson Johnson had 14 and shot very efficient at an even 60 percent from the field. Austin Holt put in eight points and freshman Tyson Good scored seven. Isaac Chambers also chipped in three. It was a hard fought battle throughout the game and the Kings won every single quarter by one, two, or three points. It was quite the defensive game as well with a total score of both teams under 100. The hustle stats for the Kings included three charges, one by Isaac Chambers, Tyson Johnson, and Carson Vest respectively. Easton Good also had nine deflections with six steals.

Cass got out to a hot start then slowed down in the end of the first quarter, but a miraculous deep three taken by Easton Good at the end of the first went in and put life back into the Kings. This shot gave Cass a one point lead heading into the second quarter. The second quarter was great defensively for both teams as the combined score for both teams was 17. Cass went into halftime leading 26-24.

Logansport started out hot in the third, but Easton Good got several steals in a short amount of time and scored on the other end. Lewis Cass was great in transition in the third quarter which helped slow down Logansport. Lewis Cass led 39-34 at the end of the third. Both teams were solid in the fourth, and Logan got the Cass lead down to two. Cass nailed clutch free throws to close the game which they could not hit in the first three quarters. The final score was a Lewis Cass victory 52-45.

After the win Easton Good and Coach Kyle Johnson were quoted on Pharos-Tribune. Good said, “I just thought everybody played well, all the way down to the last guy off the bench.” He later stated “I think it’s awesome. None of us have ever done this. It hasn’t been done for 11 years.” This was a great win for Cass and they will carry this momentum into Friday’s game against Hamilton Heights. Kyle Johnson also stated, “Mostly I’m just excited for these guys. It’s been a long time. I don’t know much about the Cass County Tournament like I would but I do know these guys are committed to each other.” While Johnson is excited about the win he wants to keep the team humble.“My biggest thing is to keep them humble and understand that we’ve got a long way to go,” Johnson said.

Easton Good, Tyson Johnson, and Austin Holt made the all-county tournament team along with two Logansport members. Easton Good was named tournament MVP while averaging 20.5 points, seven rebounds, and four assists throughout both tournament games.
