Girls Tennis Season Is Almost Here

Spring is almost here and that means girls’ tennis season will be here before we know it. The outlook for the team looks bright this year, considering we have strong senior leaders and many experienced players. I am excited to manage, and I have high expectations for the girls. In my opinion the number one priority would be winning sectionals.
Leading the team is number one singles player and four-year varsity team member Sarah Rankert. Sarah has been training during the off-season and has improved by managing the boys team and going to Greentown for private lessons. Despite her advanced skill level, she still sees room for improvement. “My goal is to keep getting better as an individual player.” Sarah also has very high hopes for the team as a whole. “My goal for the team is to win sectionals.” When Sarah managed the boys’ tennis team, I was very impressed with her tennis ability. She could compete with any of the boys and has a great serve. I think she is going to be very successful this year.
Another very strong senior is Alexis Goltz who plays at the number three singles spot. Alexis also managed the boys team and participated in tournaments at Greentown, which is where some of the toughest competition trains in the off-season. I am sure that practicing with competition of that caliber will prepare Alexis for any opponent that she might have to play this year. Alexis also put in a lot of work at open courts in the summer. She is very confident in her ability this year, but at the same time wants to “become a better player than I was last year.” As a team, Alexis hopes to, “Advance farther in sectionals than we did last year.” I am very excited to see how well Alexis is going to do this year.
Kennedy McClain is another experienced athlete who will be challenging for the number one doubles spot this season. She has great chemistry with her partner Alma and I think they could be very successful this year. Both Kennedy and Alma have been working out all summer and they will definitely be prepared to win a lot this season. Kennedy wants to win but also has more broad goals. “My goal is to make myself a better player this year. As far as the team goes, I would like to make the team my family.” I commend Kennedy for being a star athlete and a star citizen.
Head coach Matt Hurst is very excited for the season to begin. “The first practice is March 16th and we will have challenge matches shortly after that the second week of spring break. Open courts have been going well and they have been working hard towards our goal of getting ready for sectionals. I can tell the girls are excited to get back on the courts!” I have had the privilege of being instructed by Coach Hurst, and I think that with his guidance the team will be contenders for the sectional title.
I am excited to manage the team so I can have fun and improve my tennis skills at the same time. There are about 35 girls signed up, so the coaches will need as much help as possible. With the help of the experienced coaches like Pat Skarda and Matt Hurst, and the assistance of great managers like Brent Johnson and Bryceton Ellington, I am very excited to see what the team can accomplish this year.
