Submarine Hits Object in the Pacific
A nuclear powered US Navy Attack Submarine has struck an object while submerged in international waters in the South China Sea. Officials have said that Eleven sailors were hurt- two suffered moderate injuries and the rest had minor scrapes and bruises. All injuries were treated on the sub, so you can see that the people’s injuries were not that bad. It was said that there were no life-threatening injuries and the sub was fully operational.
In a brief statement providing a few details of an incident that happened five days ago, the US Pacific fleet said the USS Connecticut remained in a “safe and stable condition.” The Seawolf-Class Submarine’s nuclear propulsion was not affected, it added.
The extent of damage to the remainder of the sub is being assessed. The statement said, adding that the incident will be investigated. The statement did not specify the location of the incident, but two Navy officials said that it happened in the South China Seas while the Connecticut was conducting routine operations. The collision came amid escalating tensions in the region, and that same weekend the US and UK aircraft carriers conducted military exercises with Japan, Canada, the Netherlands, and New Zealand just north of Taiwan.
The officials said the sub headed toward the port at Guam. They had said the incident was not announced before Thursday so it could maintain operational security.
