LGBTQ+ Hate in America
Do you think homosexual people should have all the benefits that other humans do? Many LGBTQ+ children are oppressed, abused, and bullied in today’s society. Not just children: In most countries, being LGBT leads to prison or even death. Even if being homosexual isn’t illegal in our country, that does not stop people from abusing or bullying them. Society is oppressing the LGBT community.
First, in the United States, being a homosexual is not illegal; however, in conservative places, it is often frowned upon. According to Rachel Dowd’s article on suicide in the United States, “Lifetime suicide attempts were reported by 31% of young LGBT people, compared to 24% of the middle group, and 20% of the oldest group” (williamsinstitute.edu). A lot of the LGBTQ community is committing suicide because they think it is wrong. As an example, someone I know attempted to take their life because they were being physically bullied in school. Society seems to have started accepting, but there is still so much hate.
Finally, in our school, the LGBT community is hated, and as much as teachers and principals try to stop it, it’s still going to happen. A few others and I often get remarks about it. Recently, in the school paper, a specific teacher referred to us as “pedophiles” and “cats,” which is highly disrespectful. Luckily, the school board decided that politics should stay out of our school’s decisions. A few people that I know have said homophobic slurs to my friends and me. If you are ever bullied for your homosexuality you should report it. If you don’t report it, it won’t stop and more kids will be harassed. Even if you don’t agree with it, that does not mean you have to degrade people with slurs.
In conclusion, the LGBT community is severely oppressed and hated. A lot of the LGBTQ community is being bullied to such a point where they might consider suicide. In our school, homosexuality isn’t accepted among students. If you need help please call 1-800-273-TALK (8255).

Great on you for sharing your opinion. The suicide rate among LGBT youth is worrying and should be addressed. However you are painting it as a purely societal issue when there is more going on. Statistics show that LGBT youth are 2.5 times more likely to experience a mental illness. Mental illnesses are caused by other factors and not just society. We do need to do more to help these individuals get counseling for any mental underlying mental illness they may have.

Great article. I like how you aren’t afraid to state some opinions and back it up. There is a lot of bullying now and people have to be strong and ready because it is going to happen.

And thats your personal opinion but hate speech, and bullying is not okay.

Brett Elpers, I think you are absolutely right. Many people do get bullied for their homosexuality and it is not right for people to bully them. I really love your article and it inspired me a lot. You did a really good job on it.
