Lewis Cass has had thirteen new staff additions. I had the opportunity to interview one of those staff members, Mr. Miley. Miley is the new, sixth-grade math teacher who coached golf last year and led the team to a Sectional Championship for the second time in school history. Now, Mr. Miley is taking on a new challenge by moving up from teaching second-grade to teaching sixth-grade math. I sat down with Mr. Miley last Friday and asked him a few questions about his new position here at Lewis Cass.
There is a big difference between teaching second graders and teaching sixth graders, so I asked Mr. Miley about the biggest difference between the two grades. He answered that sixth graders have more independence compared to the much younger second graders. When I spoke to Coach Miley if math was his favorite subject, he said, ¨Yes, it is I love math!¨
Not many people know this, but Mr. Miley works with his brother-in-law, and both of their rooms are right next to each other. Yep, that is right. Mr. Miley and Mr. McDonald are brothers-in-law. I asked Mr. Miley if he liked working with his brother-in-law, and he said yes, he does enjoy working with Mr. McDonald. When I asked Mr. McDonald what his thoughts were on his brother-in-law and if he enjoyed working with him, his response was, ¨Yes, I do enjoy working with him. I think he is a good teacher and a great role model for sixth graders.¨
Lewis Cass is a small school, but it is very possible to get lost if you are new to the building. I asked Mr. Miley if he knew where all the important locations such as tech and the guidance offices were in the building or if there were any spots he did not know. He replied that he knows more about the high school building than he did when he was at the elementary school.
Finally, Lewis Cass has had multiple teachers leave or retire each of the last school years, so that leads me to my final question with Mr. Miley. Do you see yourself teaching at Cass or even teaching in general in ten years? He responded,¨Yes I do. My family and I really enjoy the Lewis Cass family.¨ So, next time you are in the sixth-grade hallway, make sure to stop and say hello to the new sixth-grade math teacher, Mr. Miley.
