The Lewis Cass Girls’ Golf Team started their season off with a win at their home course of the Logansport Country Club. It was great the girls could come out on since they have a new coach. After Mr. Jones retired, the team needed a replacement coach. Mrs. Densborn decided to take on the task of coaching the golf team.. This is her first year coaching a golf team, but she is doing a great job so far.
During an interview, Mrs. Densborn said, “This is my first season of coaching high school golf, but I have been playing golf for over twenty-five years.” Her favorite part about coaching the girls is she is able to spend the afternoon with girls that love the sport as much as she does. In her reply, she said, “Any day that you can be on the golf course is a good day.” In Coach Densborn’s opinion, the team’s short game is where they struggle the most. Putting and chipping can be some of the hardest things to get good at in golf. A golfer’s short game is so important. Coach Densborn describes it like this, “Matches are won or lost within five feet of the hole.” Someone who can drive the green from the tips may still bogie or worse on a hole if their putting is not ideal. One thing Coach Densborn is very impressed with is the team’s hospitality toward opponents and each other. Densborn said, “I am continually impressed with them.” The girls continually give each other positive feedback and are friendly to their opponents.
In an interview with the girls number one player and senior, Kendall Hlebasko, she said she really enjoyed the switch from Jones to Densborn. Even though they miss Mr. Jones, She believes, “Mrs.Densborn is gonna do great things for girls golf.” Kendall Also believes the team’s biggest challenge is putting. The first round of sectionals will begin on Friday, September 15. Kendall believes the biggest competitor in their sectional will be Northwestern High School. She wants to strive to do her best during sectionals, and the golf team may be able to pull out the first girls’ golf sectional win in school history.
The girls’ golf team will be graduating three seniors this year, and even though the team was already pretty small, Kendall believes there will be enough girls that come out to play to make a full team next season. Hopefully, the team can reach out to more girls in order to play a full varsity and junior varsity team in the coming season.
Mrs. Densborn may or may not be able to coach the team to a sectional win this year, but with her first year of coaching wrapping up, she will be able to come back next season with some different girls and a better coaching strategy. In the years to come, Coach Densborn will be able to learn and adapt to become a better coach, and she may be able to coach a team of girls to a sectional win. With the season coming to an end, fellow classmates of the golfers should support the team by going to watch one of their matches. Their first sectional match will be September fifteenth. If you are able to make it to a regular season or a sectional match, it would mean a lot to the girls to know they are being supported.
