Think of a movie that really left an impact on you. A movie that made you feel, made you laugh or made you think. What do you think made that movie so great? The writing? The acting? The directing? Maybe it was all of the above. What makes these films so great is the people behind the camera. The ones who wrote that story, acted that story and directed that story. Now think about how Hollywood is trying to take that all away from you.
Hollywood has always been known for its corruption and greed. Treating celebrities like trash, making them do inhumane things like starving themself to keep a certain physique for a movie, and overworking its writers and special effects crew for less than usual pay in Hollywood. Now that last one is the one where this all starts. Writers are paid hardly anything in Hollywood, despite the fact they’re the biggest reason the movie exists in the first place. Recently, the writers of Hollywood have decided enough was enough and demanded studios raise their pay, which is very reasonable. In response to this, Hollywood decided to not meet their demands, but instead just have AI write for them.
Recently AI has become a lot more popular in the mainstream than it ever has. At first, it was silly stuff like having it make a funny image or have it write a humorous story. What made AI appeal to people in the first place was it lacked the talent humans had, leaving all of its finished products to lack any form of passion. For some reason, Hollywood thinks this is a suitable replacement for real people, just because they don’t feel like paying the people who slave away for them. To combat this, residents of Hollywood have gone on strike, giving us the SAG-AFTRA strike. SAG-AFTRA is the name of the Writers and Actors Guild of America. The strike began on May 2, 2023, and is still going strong. They are campaigning for better treatment in Hollywood, and striking for fair pay, and they’ve got some big names in the strike according to Rolling Stone.com, such as Anna Kendrick, Bob Odenkirk, Brendan Fraser, Bryan Cranston, Awkwafina, Daniel Radcliffe, Aubrey Plaza, Adam Sandler, and Jack Black, who are all striking for fair treatment and the refusal to perform in anything not written by a real person.
Unfortunately, Hollywood seems evil in this regard, as according to Deadline.com, they are insistent on waiting for the ones on strike to not be able to pay their bills and come crawling back to them. This was said in July, and recently, according to @DiscussingFilm, Netflix Co-Owner, Ted Sarandos has stated he “does not want to set a precedent for other territories to have the audacity to ask for fair pay.” All in all, these people have a right to fair pay and treatment but are denied it. What do you think? Do these people deserve better treatment, or are they just being greedy?
