Deion Sanders, a freak of an athlete who played both professional football and baseball, is a well known figure among the sports world. This cocky style of play and lifestyle made him into a superstar. His confidence in his ability led to famous quotes like, “Water covers two-thirds of the Earth. I cover the rest.”, per On3.com Deion dominated the nineties with eight pro bowl appearances, six first-team All-Pros, and back to back Super Bowl victories with the 49ers and the Cowboys. He did this all while playing professional baseball, mainly for the Braves, during the offseason. Deion understood what hard work meant, and wanted to install that mindset into the future generations. Deion’s coaching has shown massive success, taking Jackson State from a 4-3 record to SWAC Conference champions. People understood his success as he would sign the number one recruit in the country, Travis Hunter, in 2022. This is when the Rockies came calling, Coach Prime became a buffalo.
“I’m bringing my luggage with me, and it’s Louis.” These were some of the first words to come out of Coach Prime’s mouth at their first team meeting on December 4, 2022. Before this day, Colorado’s program was at an all time worst. An 1-11 record and dead last in the conference called for a reboot. As recorded by Colorado Sports, Deion told the returning players to either fight like a ‘dawg’ or pack their bags, Seventy-one players did not want to put in the work that a winning team needs, so they packed up and headed out. This loss was matched with thirty-five new players who were ready to put up a fight. This included former number one recruit, Travis Hunter, and other star Jackson State players.
“If you don’t believe in yourself how will somebody else believe in you?” Deion had a lot of doubters coming into this year. Many reporters and sports analysts did not believe in Prime, and only fueled his fire. Coming into the 2023 season, they were only projected to win two games by Caesars Sportsbook. TCU was projected to win by 21 points, per CBS Sports. PrimeTime does not care what people think, however. Colorado came firing out the gates against the Horned Frogs, scoring first and holding the star-studded offense of TCU to only 14 points at halftime. The second half was filled with immaculate execution by the Buffaloes which led to the upset of a National Championship contender from the year prior. Deion’s own son, Shedeur (Junior), threw for a debut-record 510 yards and four touchdowns, and four of his receivers put up 100 yard games. The man of the hour, however, is Travis Hunter. Travis played snaps on both offense (WR) and defense (CB), which totaled to over 125 plays. He received for 119 yards on offense and a touchdown saving interception on defense. After one game, Travis and Shedeur are already Heisman frontrunners with Deion quoting, “Well I think we have three of them, as in Heisman contention right now.” After the game, Deion made sure the doubters knew he remembered who they were. “I kept my receipts,” as said on Fox Sports.
“I expect to be great. I expect to do what hasn’t been done. I expect to provoke change.” The Buffaloes strong performance against Colorado proved that Deion’s coaching ability is unmatched. His attitude towards the game is influencing his players as well. His main goal is turning the kids he receives into men. At the time of writing this, Deion is still undefeated with a dominant win versus Nebraska. Will this program work? Do we have a future dynasty? What can stop PrimeTime and his crew? Only one thing is certain, however, is that every Saturday we will hear Deion shout, “Gimme my theme music!”
