A day that changed the course of US history was September 11, 2001. In the early morning of this day, a plane was hijacked, and it was headed for the World Trade Center in New York City. This was an unexpected attack nobody in America saw coming. 2977 people were killed from this attack.
It was an early morning in New York City and everybody was headed to work. Then at 8:46 am, in the morning Flight 11 crashed unexpectedly into the World Trade Center’s North Tower. All passengers aboard the plane were instantly killed and employees above the 91st floor of the WTC were trapped and had no way out other than jumping. After this hit, people thought it was a plane malfunction and not really an attack. At 9:03 am, seventeen minutes after the first plane hit, flight 175 crashed into the World Trade Centers South Tower. Once this hit, people knew that the US was under attack. At 9:37 am Flight 77 crashes into the Pentagon. Us airspace was then shut down and all aircrafts in flight were ordered to land at the nearest airport. This day was truly devastating.
The 9/11 Memorial and Museum was finished being built in 2006 about five years after the attack. The memorial displays the names of all of the victims who were killed that day. Many people go to this display to honor the lost ones. The 9/11 Memorial and Museum remains the place where the annual commemoration ceremony is held. Family members of 9/11 victims will gather and then read aloud the names of those who were killed in the 9/11 attacks. There are also many other ways that this day is honored. In Indiana, there are planes flying all day with an American flag behind them.
Many people honor those who passed away in different ways. In an article by Erin Heft, reporter of KCRA 3 news she said, ‘‘Hundreds of Northern California firefighters climbed 110 flights of stairs in honor of 9/11.’’ When going up these stairs there is a picture of all 343 firefighters that lost their lives that day. This also goes on in many different places including New York City. The annual New York City stair climb hosts over 400 first responders as they climb a building at the site of 9/11 in memory of those who lost their lives on that day This goes on in many different areas on 9/11, Including Indiana. There was a memorial 9/11 stair climb at Lucas Oil Stadium to remember the 343 firefighters who gave their lives so that others could live. This shows how unselfish these people were to give their life for others. Also in many different places you go on this day you may see firefighters in gear climbing stairs.
This day truly changed the United States forever. People thought that it would bring the people apart, but it actually brought everyone together. This is a day that nobody will ever forget and we will always honor it every year.
