Justin Thomas, Rory Milcroy and Jon Rahm are just a few of the names that will be playing in this year’s Ryder Cup. You may be asking yourself what is the Ryder cup? The Ryder Cup is a professional golf competition between teams from Europe and the United States. The competition is contested every two years with the location switching between courses in the United States and Europe. This year is the forty-fourth edition of this event with the first event being played in 1927. If you are not a huge golf-buff the closest comparison would be the Olympics because the players may live and compete in the United States, but they play for Europe during the Ryder Cup.
The Ryder Cup format is different from PGA and LIV golf events. As stated on Rydercup.com there are three types of events: four ball, foursomes and singles. “In four-ball, each member of a two-man team plays his own ball, so four balls are in play on every hole. Each team counts the lowest of its two scores on each hole, and the team whose player has the lowest score wins the hole. If the low scores are tied, the hole is halved. In foursomes, each two-man team plays one ball per hole with the players taking turns until each hole is complete. Players alternate hitting tee shots, with one leading off on odd-numbered holes, and the other hitting first on even-numbered holes. The team with the low score on each hole wins that hole. If their scores are tied, the hole is halved. In singles, each match features one player from each team. The player with the lower score on each hole wins that hole. If their scores are tied, the hole is halved.”
The Ryder Cup is a historic event with many famous names playing in the event such as Tiger Woods, Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer and so many more. As previously stated the first edition was played in 1927 at Worcester Country Club in Worcester, Massachusetts where the United States won. There have been so many famous moments through the years from Ian Poulter going birdie crazy and birdieing the last five holes to take a one up win at the 2012 Ryder Cup to the War by the Shore. And not to mention the historic courses such as Whistling Straits, The Country Club , The K Club and many more.
This year’s Ryder Cup Teams are as stated on Olympics.com on the United States side we have Scottie Scheffler, Wyndham Clarke, Brian Harman, Patrick Cantlay, Max Homa, Xander Schauffele, Sam Burns,Rickie Fowler ,Brooks Koepka, Collin Moriakawa, Jordan Spieth and Justin Thomas and on the european side we have Rory McIlroy,John Rahm ,Victor Hovland , Tyrrell Hatton, Robert MacIntyre , Matt Fitzpatrick, Tommy Fleetwood, Sepp Straka, Justin Rose, Shane Lowry, Nicolai Højgaard and Ludvig Åberg. The European team this year is looking forward to bouncing back after their disastrous loss at Whistling Straits to the United States in 2021. While the Americans are looking to continue their great success.
In conclusion, the Ryder Cup is a prestigious and historic event where many great names have played and where many historic moments were made. This year’s Ryder Cup should be a fun and good event to watch if you are from the United states. That is right folks, I am predicting that the United States will wallop Team Europe at Marco Simone Golf & Country Club. But even if you are not from the United States, You should still watch the event because it is always fun to see world class professionals battle on the course.
