As the boys approach tennis sectionals, they are filled with anticipation and apprehension. The tennis team has had a great season so far, filled with grit and excitement. Five of the starting seniors unfortunately graduated last year, so Mr. Hurst had to build this year’s team from the ground up. When I asked Mr. Hurst what he had hoped his team would have achieved this season, he responded with, “Our main goal every year is to continue improving throughout the season, no matter what level we start from. The guys have done just that and I am looking forward to watching them put it all out on the courts for sectionals this week.” This season has been a building year for the team, but they have continued to play strong; and they plan to play strong during sections also.
The sectional draw took place Monday night, and the boys are confident. The team got a bye in the bracket, so they are scheduled to play Thursday night against Logansport. Kyle Henry, a senior one doubles player, said, “We are going to catch that W. I think we can beat Logan as long as Bryce and I play like I know we can. As long as we cook.” His doubles partner, Bryce Rudd, has the same confidence level as Kyle. Bryon Hurst is very confident too. When I asked about his score predictions, he said, “I hope to have a close match against Logansport. If I were to predict the score I would say 7-5, 3-6, 6-4. I think if the team comes out and plays like we do in practice then we can win 3-2.” Mr. Hurst is confident the boys will put their all out on the court. He thinks his team will perform well, “All you can ask for as a coach is for the guys to give all they have and play tough. My job is to get them ready!”
The team has three seniors this year- Bryon Hurst, Kyle Henry, and Drew Sailors who is graduating early as a junior. Bryon has set some personal and team goals for his final season of tennis. “I would say I have met my personal goals this season. I think I could have had a little better season; but for my first year playing singles, I think I did well,” said Bryon. Bryon had played doubles his entire high school career, starting at two doubles then moving up in the rank to one doubles. When five seniors graduated, Mr. Hurst had to move players around in order to give the team a little edge. Switching from doubles to singles is not easy for any player. “It’s a whole different game,” said Mr. Hurst. Bryon has handled this switch with grace. Since Bryon has played with his dad, Mr. Hurst, since he was a boy, he is a very strong player who can overcome obstacles most players can not.
The tennis team has performed to the best of their abilities this fall. The boys are certain every player will play their heart out during sectionals. As for the seniors, they are proud of their teammates and how much they have improved this fall. The team has four strong junior players to rely on next season. Sectionals will be an exciting match to watch- filled with excitement, determination, and aggressive hitting. Wish the Kings good luck as they go into their sectional match on Thursday.
