Week three of the NFLwas very exciting for the Miami Dolphins for many reasons. This was their first home game, and they got to show off some weapons like Tyreek Hill and Tua Tagovailoa as well as how they have been working both individually and jointly this offseason. This particular game was exciting because the Dolphins put up seventy points on the outmatched and undersized defense of the Denver Broncos.
This game was exciting from the very first snap for the Dolphins. The last time a score close to this was accomplished was November 27, 1966 when the Washington Redskins put up seventy-two points on the New York Giants. Miami is now tied for the second all-time points scored in a game because in 1950 the Los Angeles Rams defeated the Baltimore Colts with a score of 70-27. Rarely does any team ever put up even more than fifty points in a game. This has only been accomplished less than twenty five times all time, according to ESPN sports writer, Marcel Louis-Jacques.
The first quarter the Dolphins came out scoring fourteen points while the Broncos scored only seven. The Dolphins struck first when Tua hit Tyreek for a fifty-four yard touchdown pass. Miami’s running back started off well in the first quarter with many outstanding runs including a fifteen yard run up the Bronco’s sideline. The second Miami touchdown is credited to De’von Achane who ran through three would-be tacklers. Achane ended the game with an amazing 208 rush yards, while averaging 10.9 yards-per-carry, and two rushing touchdowns.
On the Dolphins’ first drive of the second quarter, they drove the ball all the way down the field where De’von Achane continued his substantial game when he received a shovel pass from Tagovailoa to score a five yard touchdown. Near the end of the second quarter, Miami’s drive stalled out on the thirty-five yard line where Miami went for it on fourth and one. Although this was a good play by the Broncos’ defense, it was one of the few things they did positive all game. With all of his teammates’ success, Raheem Mostert was itching to get his turn. With 1:52 left before halftime, he ran a twenty one yard run to the outside and ran through many arm tackles to get into the endzone for six. Denver had one shot to score before halftime, but they did not capitalize. When Russell Wilson completed a pass to Courtland Sutton he fumbled and Andrew Van Ginkel recovered and took it back though coming up just short of the touchdown. With 1:33 left Raheem Mostart capitalized on the fumble recovery by running it in for a three yard touchdown. At halftime Maimi controlled the scoreboard 13-35.
Throughout the second half of the game, it was still very one sided. The Dolphins still made the most of Denver’s mistakes like Courtland Sutten’s second fumble and many third downs. To add on to Miami’s historic night, “they had 726 yards of total offense which is the franchise record and is just nine yards short of the all time NFL record” said Marcel Louis-Jacques of ESPN. This game has likely given the Dolphins the idea that they could be Super Bowl contenders this year; but for Denver this game has them questioning what kind of season they are going to have without being 0-3.
