The 80s, commonly referred to as the “best decade,” is a time period many look back on fondly, even those who were not around for it. Remembered for its movies, fashion sense, and maybe most of all, its music. Many great bands were at their peak in the 80s, including but not limited to; AC/DC, Metallica, Michael Jackson, Joan Jett, and so many more. The topic of today’s article centers around two musicians who were at their peak; Cher and Madonna. Back in the good ol’ days, it was quite apparent Madonna and Cher had more than a little bad blood between them, given how often they would mock each other in their song lyrics. Cher first spoke about her dislike of the musician in a 1991 interview on CBS, where she recounted a time when she had Madonna over at her home, where Madonna was described as “very rude.” Cher has recounted the story numerous times, with her biggest complaint of the other musician being she seemed like a “spoiled brat” to her. Despite all of that, Cher admitted she holds a decent amount of respect towards Madonna, calling her music “ahead of its time,” and “knowing the trend way before.” The feud has been a point of interest for many fans for years, always getting a kick out of Cher’s passive-aggressive comments, another infamous example according to Grace Turney, writer for Cheatsheet.com, when Cher was on the Ellen Show when asked for three musicians she would duet with she humorously answered with “Adelle, Pink, and, uh, not Madonna.”
Despite this year of supposed beef, during an Ask Me Anything interview on Reddit, Cher was asked if she actually hated Madonna, to which she shockingly answered “no.” When further questioned on this, according to Foxnews.com, Cher and Madonna buried the hatchet years ago, after Cher’s comments on the singer in the CBS interview. Anything past that has been all in good fun, apparently. There were some subtle hints at this, such as during one of Madonna’s reels showing off moments from her career, she included the clip of Cher calling her a spoiled brat. The two seem to be on good terms and have taken a few photos together, the most recent of which is a photo of them sharing a seat while leaning onto each other. I think this speaks well of celebrity rivalries. A feud between two popular musicians that fans enjoyed seeing and would wait for the next dig at each other definitely helped keep eyes on them and is likely to happen quite often in the industry. How many times can you recall a celebrity having beef with another one? How many people do you recall seeing talk about it online? How many times was it trending? While this one likely was not staged, it is equally as likely Cher exaggerated her claims, whether to make Madonna look worse, or just to get people intrigued, either way, it seemed to have worked. The lives of celebrities are ones many people find themselves invested in, and this has been one of the longest-lasting ones people can remember finding themselves intrigued by, and definitely will not be the last.
