Our Lady Kings swimmers competed in the Cass County Swim Meet on Tuesday night of last week. The swimmers had a great finish, which got them the win at the Inaugural Cass County Swim Meet. Lewis Cass had some top finishers in the meet, including Maryn Zeck (junior), Mia Hall (freshman), Maci Garland (senior), Macy Armstrong (freshman), and Sydney Holmquest (junior). When asked if some of the girls thought they would win the swim meet, Maryn Zeck said, “I thought we had a pretty good chance at winning the meet. We have a core group of girls who can swim and win any event that our coach puts us in. Our team also has a strong group of girls that are good at their strokes and can get us the fourth and fifth-place finishes that we need in order to win the meet.” Mia Hall also thought they had a good chance of winning the meet, “I did expect our team to win the Cass County Meet because we have a really solid team this year, and people are already starting to improve and get better than they were at the beginning of the season!” The Lady Kings have to pick up pace this season after losing Erika Baber, a former Lewis Cass swimmer now swimming at Eastern Illinois University, but they are already looking strong, and it shows in their times.
Getting back into a sport is never easy, especially with a sport as difficult as swimming. When Maryn was asked about her times, she gave an answer most athletes can relate to, “My times I swam at the meet were not my best times, but it is still very early in the season, and I am sure that me, as well as, the other swimmers will improve greatly as the season progresses.” Even at the beginning of the season,Mia Hall has a positive outlook on her times, “I was pretty satisfied with my times! It was the first meet, so everything was a little slower than last year, but I’m sure I will get back up there and improve as the season goes on!” They are both anticipating their times getting back to their best, even though it is clear they are already top swimmers in the county, along with plenty of other girls from Lewis Cass.
Competitions for any sport can always be tough. Being able to do what you love most makes it all worth it. Luckily for Maryn and Mia, their favorite events are one, out of many, of the strokes they are best at swimming. Mia Hall was able to swim in her favorite event- the 100 breaststroke. Breaststroke is a tough event, and unfortunately, Mia did not win that event. However, Mia Hall is not too upset about the loss because of her outstanding positive attitude. When Mia was asked about her loss, she showed just how positive she is, “I did not win the 100 breaststroke that I swam at the County Meet. I raced against Chloe Chan from Pioneer, and she is an incredible breaststroke swimmer. I didn’t lose by much, so I was still satisfied with what I accomplished. I also feel like there are pretty good swimmers in the area.” Maryn Zeck was also able to swim in her favorite event, the 100 backstroke, where she was able to take first place.
Lewis Cass has the potential to be great this swim season. They have two returning record holders under their belt- Maryn Zeck and Maci Garland. As Mia Hall swoops in this season, they have even more of an edge which helped them secure the win at the Cass County Meet. They have numerous other swimmers who do their part in meets, which helps the team tremendously. Great job Lady Kings!
