The time for suplexes and leg drops has almost arrived. Although we are not allowed to do those kinds of moves, our wrestlers are still very capable and efficient at what they do. The wrestling season is almost upon us, and the excitement for the wrestling season is not going unnoticed. Our wrestlers have trained long and hard, and they are now going to show off their skills to their fans. However, to understand all of the excitement, you need a little information and the amount of hard work and dedication our wrestlers put into this sport.
Our wrestling team is devoted to the cause and practices five days each week, honing their skills of pinning other wrestlers to the floor in addition to escaping them. As I alluded to, the main way to score points in the sport is by pinning your opponent and getting them on their back, which is much more difficult than one may think; however, our wrestling team was still a very competitive dual meet team last year with an impressive cumulative record of 15-5. However, the team could only score this due to all of our outstanding wrestlers.
Our two seniors, Elijah Martin and Max Grist, are good influences and leaders for our team, especially our upcoming freshman. Eli wrestles at 215 and has extensive varsity experience. He was the regional alternate last year and has been a vocal and influential leader. Max Grist wrestles at 126 and is currently competing with one of the juniors, Eli Bower who wrestles at 132, to see who will wrestle in their respective weight class. Max is very experienced and is returning to the varsity team while Eli Bower wants to go a step further this year. The seniors are not the only promising candidates, however. One of our upcoming freshmen, Eli Grist, weighs in at 113 and has had very impressive off-season matches and may be competing at 120. One of our other promising freshmen, Dominic Sebastian, has returned to Cass and is in the same weight class as Eli Grist. If Eli moves up to 120, he has the opportunity of being varsity. These are just a few of the amazing athletes that we have on our wrestling team. In order to see the rest, I guess you all will have to come to the wrestling meets. All of our athletes have put time and dedication into the sport in order to improve their techniques, regardless of whether they are upcoming freshmen or experienced seniors. Mr. Burrous, head coach of the Cass wrestlers said, “Athletes in all sports can always improve. That’s the great thing about athletics. No matter how good you are, you are never finished improving.” In conclusion, our wrestling team is looking very promising and is continuing to improve. I hope you all go to the wrestling meets and allow them to show off their skills to you.
