In this day and age, there are so many different fashion styles and trends. If you look at the different styles over the years, you will notice that clothing, hair, and makeup styles have changed throughout time. We have changed from things as small as wanting the biggest hair, to the flattest hair. I interviewed a mom and daughter here at Lewis Cass to compare how they dressed differently since they were born in completely different times.
When asked what Dixie Wagoner likes to wear to school, she replied, “I like to wear sweats, leggings, my Uggs, and a sweatshirt.” When she wants to dress up she says, “Sometimes I wear jeans if I want to dress up and cute tops, and probably my Uggs too.” Dixie has a style depending on the season. Wagoner says, “My outfits definitely depend on the season because during summer I go for more color and during winter I go more neutral.”
When asked if Dixie wears anything similar to her mom she says, “I would never dress the way my mom dressed in high school, but now my mom and I match outfits all the time. We actually just bought a pair of matching mom jeans to twin together, and we have matching pajama pants.”
Although we read how Dixie dresses up, she normally dresses pretty casually. Most of the girls and guys normally wear pretty casual and comfy clothes to school. It is pretty rare to look around and see girls wearing dresses on a day-to-day basis now, especially while at school.
Mrs. Sonafrank, one of our teachers here at Lewis Cass. and Dixie’s mom, described the differences in the way that she dressed compared to Dixie. Mrs. Sonafrank says, “When I was in high school, we dressed a lot differently. It was not uncommon for girls to dress up. You might have seen girls wearing slacks or blouses with a sweater. We wore a lot of ballet slippers, Eastland boat shoes, and Keds. I really liked plaid in high school, so it was not uncommon for me to wear plaid shorts or pants with a sweater. Our idea of dressing down was wearing jeans and a school sports hoodie. We also wore layers… two different colored t-shirts with the sleeves rolled up, or two pairs of slouched socks with both colors showing. We tucked in our shirts and wore a belt, and it was common for girls to look “polished” or “put together”. You would not have seen girls wearing baggy sweats and sweatshirts hanging off their shoulders. And the hair… We used our AquaNet hairspray like it was a staple to our day! Our hair could withstand a tornado!.”
As Mrs. Sonafrank and her friends dressed very differently from the way we do, it is interesting to see how different it is now. Mrs. Sonafrank says, “When dressing up for an event, you would find me in a dress. The dress would be close to knee length and might have been color-blocked or would have embellishments like a lace color and fancy buttons. I wore a lot of heels back then when my feet could handle dress shoes. I wore makeup in high school, as did most girls. We liked our color, so our blush was bright and our eye shadow palette was brighter. We wore a lot of electric blue eyeshadow and mascara. We also wore lipstick and lipgloss. Aren’t you glad you didn’t live back then?!? It took TIME to get ready for school”
Fashion has changed a lot over the years and still continues to change. People dress in what is “trendy” or “cool.” You do not see fancy dressing and full glam makeup often, especially during the school day. Fashion is a way that you can express yourself and your personality!
