The FFA school week kicked off with Truck Tuesday. We had seventeen trucks participate in the contest. Three of the trucks were semi trucks, and the others were all pickup trucks.
Wednesday, February 21 was the tractor day. Thirteen people participated in the day by driving their tractors to school. There was even one Polaris Ranger driven by Drew Sailors. The biggest tractor was a New Holland T9 driven by Kinsey Mennen, and the smallest tractor was a Minneapolis Moline driven by Cole Specht. For more information about the tractor day, you can watch episode #11 of The King’s Cast.
Wednesday was also the school pork chop lunch. Every year, the FFA provides pork chops at lunch to buy for $2. The FFA members started the grill at about 9:00 am. By 9:40 am, one hundred and fifty pork chops were on the grill for the first lunch period. All three lunches were provided with one hundred and fifty pork chops to sell. To make sure every student got one, students were only allowed to buy one pork chop each.
Wednesday night was the FFA Volleyball Tournament. Teams had to pay a dollar per player, and the money went to the FFA benevolent fund. There were teams in a double elimination style bracket. The tournament started at 6:00 pm and did not get over until about 10:30 pm. The winning team of the tournament was called SWW which included Riley Johnson, Nolan Hines, Nolan Hahn, Wade Tocco, Trevor Rowe, and Carson Rowe.
Thursday morning, FFA members put on a teacher breakfast. The members got to the school at 6:00 in the morning to start breakfast. The breakfast included eggs, pancakes, sausage, biscuits and gravy, and fruit. The staff members also had a choice of coffee, milk, or orange juice. The FFA members also took to-go containers with breakfast out to the bus drivers. The bus drivers were very thankful for Drew Sailors and Carter Armstrong because they delivered the food in the pouring rain.
While all the other activities were going on, the FFA had Ag Olympics going on in the shop. One of the events included a hay bale toss. Members had to toss a hay bale over a bar without knocking it off to move on. Each day, the bar would move higher. Jed Frey ended up winning the competition. Another activity included a timed obstacle course. Participants had to carry two five-gallon buckets of water around obstacles while balancing an egg on a spoon in their mouths. The members had to complete the course as quickly as possible without dropping the egg.
Saturday evening was the pork chop dinner. Workers got to the school at about 11:00 am. to start the cooking. Mr Appleton said, “I want to get the people moving through the line as quickly as possible. I do not want people waiting in line for more than fifteen minutes.” All of the pork chops were grilled by about 5:00. About 1,200 pork chops were grilled. The dinner ended and was all cleaned up by about 8:00.
The Lewis Cass FFA had a very successful FFA week. The truck and tractor day had very good turnouts. The teachers were very thankful for their breakfast on Thursday. There were also a lot of sales with the pork chop dinner. Hopefully, next year is just as, if not more, successful than this year.
