The Lewis Cass Boys Golf Team is starting its season next week. Their home course will be the Logansport Golf Club for the second year in a row. Last year, the boys were able to win sectionals, and they are coming back hoping for another strong season. The team lost one senior last year, so they have four returning varsity players. Hopefully, the team will be able to improve in practices and have an even better season this year.
Rylan Stoller, Garret Helvie, Kyle Henry, Jon Morris, and Big Drew Sailors are the five seniors the team has this year. For the seniors, this is their last chance to play high school golf, and want to make it the best they can. Rylan said, “It’s crazy to me that this is my last year, the past three years have seemed to go by very fast, but I’m excited to see how we’re going to do.” The seniors are the leaders of the team and will be trying to push the other team members to do their best in order to prepare for sectionals. Sophomore, James Myers, said, “I think everyone improved their game last year, and winning sectionals gives a big boost to the team’s spirit. I think we will be able to improve a lot this year as well in order to take home another sectional title.”
Most of the guys have been practicing since the end of last season. The guys try to get out as often as they can with the warmer weather. Rylan also said, “I think I can improve my scores this year. I’ve practiced a good amount since last season to try and lower my score for this upcoming season.” Some of the only ways to improve your golf game is to either play the course or hit on the driving range, so the warmer weather is very nice to be able to practice in.
The team is very thankful that the Logansport Golf Club is allowing them to use the facilities as the team’s home course. The club gives the team access to the course as well as the driving range. The course has recently come under new management, and they are trying to improve the course conditions. The previous owners let the course become run down, and it will take a few years before the course is back to high quality. Coach Miley said, “I haven’t had a chance to make it out there, so I can’t comment on what it currently looks like. I know the new owners put quite a bit of work into the course last year, but some things take time to improve. The tee boxes that they moved may take a year or two for the new grass to grow in completely. Regardless, I am thankful that Logansport Golf Course allows us to play there each season.” For the seniors, they will not be on the team long enough to see the course back in optimum condition, but hopefully, in a few years, the underclassmen will be able to play a premium course.
Last year, the team won the sectional championship for the first time since 2012. Coach Miley said, “We are fortunate to be returning four of our five varsity players from last year, so I feel that we should be able to compete for another sectional title. Obviously, winning a sectional isn’t easy so we cannot just assume we will win. Our golfers will need to put in the work during the season to prepare themselves to be ready to compete in June.” The team will be practicing hard and using Saturday tournaments to prepare for the sectionals this year. The team will also be participating in the new conference. Moving from the Hoosier Conference to the Three Rivers Conference should be an advantage. “Overall, yes I think we will be able to finish a little higher in the conference tournament, but there are still some very competitive teams in the TRC. I would say that Northfield is entering the season as the favorite to win the TRC title.”, said Coach Miley.
With the team’s first practice on Monday, March 11, they hope to kick their season off strong. The team hopes to practice hard to prepare for their first match. If you are available, you should go to Round Barn Golf Course in Rochester on April 6 to support your Lewis Cass Boys Golf Team. Hopefully, they have a good season and can bring home another sectional title.
