What’s up brother, Tuesday Tuesday, Check Check, and Pressure makes diamonds, and I like pressure! You have probably heard those catchphrases a time or two in the last month or so from people you know saying the catchphrases to seeing sports stars such as Dallas Mavericks point guard, Luka Doncic, to Ole Miss head football coach, Lane Kiffen, and even our football coach Mannering said, ¨Special teams, special players¨to me in the hallway (Yes, that really happened!) So, I asked myself the question as to why people started doing this and where it started. These few phrases are the doing of one man and that man is Sketch. After figuring that out, I decided to take a deep dive into why he got so famous so quickly and what made him create these catchphrases.
I first started with Who is Sketch? Sketch gained popularity on TikTok before transitioning to Twitch, where he gained 670 thousand followers. Sketch has been making content for about a year, starting out in the summer of 2023. Most of Sketch’s content consists of him playing video games online mostly he plays Madden. In most of his Streams, he yells at the people he is playing and always says funny phrases such as ¨Check check¨ and ¨What’s up brother¨ With all this popularity Sketch has gained a lot of endorsements and collaborations. Such as Good Good Golf which is a popular golf YouTube channel that sketches played golf which was a legendary collaboration.
Although Sketch has a very funny personality online and has funny outbursts of yelling that is not how he is off screen. The real name of the uber-famous TikTok/YouTube star is Kylie Cox and in leaked videos of Sketch off-screen, his voice is very different than when he is on stream. Before he became famous for his funny outbursts and catchphrases Cox was a football star according to Cox’s MaxPreps bio he was a 2-year varsity letterman at his high school playing tight end and linebacker.
When fans found out that he played football in high school, they instantly went to his old high school Hudl profile and found the clips of him on the gridiron, and the clips were impressive, to say the least. The clips show him throwing out hard hits after hard hits and fans noticed this and started to make edits of him playing and posting them to TikTok which made Sketch’s popularity skyrocket even more.
Next, I looked at what made him come up with all these funny but ridiculous catchphrases. After a few hours of looking at YouTube videos of highlights of him playing games, I can conclude that there is no rhyme or reason for him making up these catchphrases. He just said them out of randomity and it caught on. In conclusion, Sketch is probably one of the more interesting people to get famous quickly. I say that mostly because he got popular for just saying random stuff. But if you are ever looking for a good laugh, Sketch is someone I would recommend watching.
