The Lewis Cass Boys’ tennis team is working hard to prepare for their 2024 season. The team is putting in hard work as they prepare for their first match which will be played at Logansport High School on August 21. Coach, Matt Hurst, was asked a few questions about this season and the preparation for it. One question Coach Hurst was asked is how the team was preparing for the upcoming season. Coach Hurst said the team uses the first two weeks of practice to prepare for matches. Coach Hurst also said the two weeks they have to prepare before the team’s first match is never enough time to prepare, but the boys show up and work hard to improve and get ready for the season. Another question Coach Hurst was asked is how the team is different this season from the team last season. Coach Hurst replied saying they lost three varsity players from last season’s team but other strong players have stepped up and filled the holes, and he is excited to see the boys come out and play in matches. The last thing Coach Hurst was asked is what are his goals for the team this season. Coach Hurst’s goals for this season are to work hard and improve throughout the season to be prepared for sectionals, as well as to learn from victories and defeats. Coach Hurst says that all matches are learning opportunities.
Lewis Cass senior and varsity tennis player, Nolan Hines, gave us a look into what it is like to be a player on the team. Hines was asked from his perspective how the team looks going into this season. Hines said before the season he was unsure the team would be very successful this season. Hines then learned of a foreign exchange student from Germany, Nelson Melin, who would be joining the team for his exchange year. Hines believes this addition to the team will help tremendously with singles making them a lot stronger. Hines was also asked what his goals for this season are. Hines says his goals for this season are to have an enjoyable season, to come out with a winning record, as well as to win sectionals this season. Hines was asked what his favorite memory was in the years he has played for Coach Hurst. Hines says he does not have one favorite memory but has many great memories to look back on in years to come. Hines also said Coach Hurst is an amazing coach and does a great job keeping the season enjoyable and exciting for the team, as well as helping the team, and individuals, grow as tennis players throughout every season.
The team is looking forward to the start of their match play this fall. The team has seventeen matches or tournaments before they enter the start of their postseason. Although the time and location for sections have not yet been announced, sectionals will begin on Wednesday, October 2, for the 2024 Lewis Cass Boys Tennis team.
