Imagine walking down the hallway of your school, seeing decorated door frames, football players wearing their Cass pride jerseys, hallways decked out in red and blue, and students participating in the dress-up days. That is right, it is homecoming week! Lewis Cass students are helping create homecoming sheets to hang on the fences around the Memorial Stadium at the game. Everyone is hyped for Friday’s game and the Homecoming Dance afterward. The Kings are going to zap the Zebras.
The first people interviewed were our high school Student Council sponsors Mrs. Burch and Mrs. Sipe. First, they were asked what they liked most about running homecoming. Mrs Burch said, “I love getting to know the students on a completely different level than I get in the classroom. I love seeing their true selves shine. I really enjoy being able to be a part of so much more of the entire school than I get to do on a daily basis. I feel like the school is more united during HOCO.” Mrs. Sipe added she loves to see the students participate in the dress-up days and show their school spirit. Next Sipe and Burch were asked what the best homecoming tradition was at Lewis Cass. Burch stated she likes all the traditions and wishes we had even more of them. She is partial to the Variety Show and wishes we had even more activities. She was in the very first Variety Show which was HOCO 1984! Back then, the drama department ran all of the Variety Shows and performed all the acts. There were no senior skits or slide shows and Mrs. Burch thinks this is an amazing addition to the tradition. She loves seeing the talent, working with the students, and also working alongside Mr. Wilson and Mr. Hinshaw. The Variety Show is Wednesday, September 18 in Lewis Cass Auditorium at 7 p.m. Admission is one dollar. Mrs. Sipe’s favorite homecoming tradition is dress-up week, especially pajama day. The dress-up days for Homecoming Week are as follows; Monday is pajama day, Tuesday is students dress like the teachers and teachers dress like students, Wednesday is bring anything but a water bottle day, Thursday is wear your class color, and Friday is wear your Cass Kings gear!
Mr. Hinshaw and Mr. Wilson are part of the homecoming committee and were asked what they like most about assisting with homecoming and their favorite traditions. Mr. Hinshaw said, “ I help the most with the Variety Show. I enjoy watching and listening to what the students bring to the stage each year. Mr. Wilson said, “ It’s good to keep some traditions alive as the years go by. The best tradition was the decorating of hallways. We’ve gotten away from that for a few years but Mrs. Burch is working to bring it back.”
The Homecoming Dance is September 20, 2024, after the game in the cafeteria and costs three dollars at the door. Coach Mannering was asked about his expectations for Friday’s homecoming game. Coach stated, “ I am excited to get on the field with Rochester again. Last year we were out-matched physically, but it gave us a good look at where we need to get if we want to compete in this conference. This year, Rochester is one of 2-3 schools that could win the conference again, so we will get another good chance to see where we are.”
Whether you’re going to the Variety Show, showing your Cass Kings Pride at the football game, or participating in the Homecoming Dance, it is a great way to make high school memories.
