The leaves are changing colors which means the fall play is in full swing here at Cass. The Lewis Cass Drama Department is excited to produce the play Jack and the FrankenBeanstalk. Directed by the one and only Ms. Burch, this play is going to be one to come and see. With senior leads such as Abbi Mullett-Stepp and Will Rose, this is sure to captivate the audience.
Head director, Ms. Burch was asked a few questions regarding the play. In the past, we know that she has written and directed her own but this year she is taking on a new role of executing a prewritten play. Burch said in order to find such a play she reads several scripts and decides which one fits her potential cast members the best. When asked what drew her to this choice Burch said it was a “Mash up of silliness, which is what we like to do.” The play is a spin-off of Jack and the Beanstalk and Frankenstein with a few twists. One of which Frankenstein is a girl. Other interesting characters are the village people and the Bean family. If you were curious about the price of perfection to produce these plays, it is around six hundred dollars. This includes royalties and scripts for the cast members. Burch says she is most excited to see how the cast members decide how they want to portray their roles.
Of course, such a production could not happen without a cast. Returning for his second year as a part of the drama department Will “Cowboy” Rose gave some input on the play. Taking on the role of The Cowboy, Will said his goal is to memorize his lines faster this year. William’s previous experience includes “Peter Pan,” “A Murder Mystery,” “Oklahoma!,” and “Seussical” Director Burch said the students practice four days a week, so Rose is sure to reach his goal. Other senior leads for this play include Abbi Mollet-Stepp as Dr. Frankenstein and Paisley Strong as Ogre.
All hands are on deck to make opening night run like a well-oiled machine. Yes, Burch is the main and head director of the play, but she also gets some behind-the-scenes assistance. Lilly Shaffer takes on the role of the main stage manager and assistant director. From painting sets to filling in for characters that are absent, she plays a huge part in creating such a well-done production. Burch is also aided by previous cast members who return with helping hands.
With senior leads, a well-experienced director, and much assistance from other members “Jack and the FrankenBeanstalk” will be one you do not want to miss. We wish the best of luck to everyone as a part of the process of making these lines come to life. You can watch this Lewis Cass Drama Department production on November 22, 23, and 24. The cost is $3 for students and $5 for adults. So whether you are looking for a good laugh or you just want to experience hard work paying off, come to Cass this fall’s play.
