This Friday night is senior night for most of the high school football teams in the state of Indiana. It is a special night because it is the last time seniors will get to play a game on their home field. If seniors played in youth league, they could have been playing on that field for eight to ten years. This Friday is senior night for the Kings and we are playing the Manchester Squires. This is an important game for both teams because Cass needs to win to have a winning season and the Squires need it to build momentum going into the Peru game.
Each senior was asked about his favorite high school football memory. Right guard, Nick Parks said, “My favorite memory of high school football is either beating Peru this year or beating Twin Lakes freshman year. Another favorite memory was Hayden McClain playing the guitar after a wet and freezing cold practice during sophomore year.”
Next, center, Jesse Sipin said, “My favorite memory of high school football has to be from my freshman year when we beat North Miami. When we played eighth-grade football, we did not win a single game and didn’t even get close. My freshman year, we picked up North Miami because Pioneer had to drop out because of Covid. We crawled away with a 14-7 win. Even though it was not a great game, it was the first win that I had experienced.”
Star running back, Jonny Mack, said, “My favorite memory of high school football was when we beat Peru this year because last year we did not come close. Another great memory was last year when we beat Southwood and it was a rainy game. Then, we slid in the mud after the win.”
QB1, Griffin Wolf, said, “My favorite high school football memory is beating Tipton my sophomore year when we were supposed to get beat badly and singing Party in the USA after wins. Singing Party in the USA after a game means you won and winning is hard so that is always special.”
Next, wide receiver, Kolten Young said, “My favorite memory is when we fit four beds in a room at Wing-T camp and had eight people sleeping in the same room. It was great to be surrounded by each other, even though one of the first practices we had got all of our stuff wet and it sucked. It’s great how we came together when it sucked.”
Last, but not least, defensive end, Braylen Mayhil said, “My favorite memory of high school football is beating Peru this year. We lost badly to them last year, and it fired us up to beat them this year. It was a really fun game and one that I will remember forever.”
Coach Plank was asked what his favorite memory was with this particular group of seniors. He chose the Peru game this year as his favorite memory with this senior class, “My favorite memory so far of this senior class was beating Peru this season. Not only the win itself and how the guys played but especially after the game.” As you probably know Peru beat us up last year, so coming into Peru week we knew we had to play with minimal mistakes. Coach Mannering said many times before the game and at halftime, “If we can finish this game and play four quarters of good football, we will win, and you will remember this one for a long time.” Plank also said after the Peru game, “After the game, it seemed like the fans and players were never going to leave the field, and they finally did, but then it seemed like there was a commotion in the players’ side of the locker room. I went over there to find most of the senior class, Griffin Wolf said, “I’m gonna stay here all night.” We eventually made them go home, but it was just a great team win and a great night to be a King, and the seniors really led the team that night.”
Coach Crozier was also asked what his favorite memory with this particular group of seniors was and he said, “First memory of this group is watching Jonny Mack develop into a lockdown defensive player in 4th-5th grade during recess. He was a “DUDE” even back then. Overall favorite memory with this group is by far the Peru game. It was a very close, physical game where we just figured out how to get it done. This senior class is full of great young men. Seeing them celebrate after the game was just as exciting for the staff as it was for the players.”
