The Lewis Cass boys’ wrestling team is working hard to prepare for their upcoming season. The team works hard every day after school as their first match is on Saturday, November 23 at Twin Lakes High School. Their first matches are scheduled in the Mike Atwood Memorial Invitational. Senior, Nick Park and Head Coach, Mr. Burrous, were asked some questions about the upcoming season.
Lewis Cass senior wrestler, Nick Park, gave his opinion on how the team was looking so far this preseason. The team is looking good but is young this year. He explained the team has a lot of new freshmen and a few other new faces, but everyone has been working hard to learn and prepare. Another question Park was asked was how the team was preparing for the season. Park said the team has been doing lots of learning and building their knowledge of moves. As well as spending a good amount of time conditioning to get into the rhythm of the season. He also explained the team has been mentally and physically training for the season very well. Park described how the team is different this year from last since the team only lost a few seniors. Park explained the team is largely the same as last season, as they only lost two seniors, so a majority of the team is returning.
Although the team mainly remains the same, Park believes the team will have a different feel but will continue to mesh together as the season progresses. Finally, Park was asked what he was looking forward to most for his final upcoming season. Park says he is most looking forward to seeing how the sophomores are going to perform this season. He explained how many sophomores wrestled varsity last year and most did succeed. Park says he is eager to watch them and see how they improved in the off-season, and how that will transfer into the actual season.
Head wrestling coach, Mr. Burrous was asked in his opinion about how the team changed this season from last. Coach Burrous responded that every team is different to him. Burrous explained when the season ends and the seniors leave, he feels like the team will not be the same the next season. Then a new group of seniors begins their season and the process repeats. He also said he is excited to see what leadership Nick Park and Eli Bowyer bring to the team. Next, Coach Burrous was asked what the team was doing to prepare for the season. Burrous explained the team has been conditioning, drilling, and teaching in practice. He also said the team’s first meet is much earlier than usual, so the team has been doing more conditioning and live wrestling than normally at this point in the season. This is because wrestlers must be prepared for the first meet. Burrous was also asked what the main goal for the season is this year. Coach Burrous responded that advancing as many wrestlers as possible, as far as they could in the state series. He says another goal is to represent Lewis Cass with good sportsmanship and dignity. Burrous wants to win as much as anybody else but is not going to sacrifice doing what is right to win.
