As the new winter sports season is coming into full swing, the swim family is diving into practice to prepare for the upcoming season. Head coaches Haley Ramer and Mandy Hall believe the King and Queenfish have a bright season ahead of them.
First senior, Maryn Zeck, was interviewed about her upcoming final season. Maryn has swum competitively for around thirteen years. One of Maryn’s goals for her senior season is to beat her personal best times in each of her events: the 200 IM, 100 backstroke, 400 free relay, and the 200 free relay. Zeck holds three records. One of them is the 100 backstroke and the others are the 400 free relay and the 200 free relay. When asked what her favorite swim memory was, Zeck said, ¨ My favorite swim memory was my sophomore year sectionals when our relay broke the record during prelims and then broke it again during finals. The girls on the relay made the seasons so fun.¨
Next, head coaches Mandy Hall and Haley Ramer were asked about the upcoming season. Haley and Mandy are both excited about the upcoming season. Haley said, ¨It is always nice to reconnect with athletes that you haven’t seen in a while and see the improvements from year to year.¨ They were both asked what they enjoy most about coaching. Hall stated, ¨I think what I love most about coaching is watching the athletes track their own personal progress. Although we are a team, individual success is what really makes coaching enjoyable.¨ Ramer said, ¨The kids! Seeing kids push themselves and do something they didn’t think they could do.¨ Coach Hall said practices are updated on a weekly basis when the coaches look at the team and see how well they are swimming. The coaches make adjustments to make sure they are looking at quality over quantity. Hall has been coaching for seven years and Ramer has been coaching for seventeen years and both are looking forward to a great season.
Lastly, Lewis Cass sophomore, Jayden Ramer, was asked about the upcoming season. Jayden said his favorite event is the 50 freestyle. This is his favorite event because it is a fast race. Ramer stated, ¨You have to swim perfectly: a good start, flip turn, and finish.¨ Other teams will usually put their fastest swimmer in this race, so you are swimming against the fastest swimmers on the other team. Jayden has been swimming since he was just two years old and still has three more seasons to go counting this season. Ramer’s goal this season is to get under a minute in butterfly or backstroke. His other goal is to try to make it to the State meet. Jayden is not sure what event but if he can make it to state this year, but he is hopeful to make it throughout his high school career.
In conclusion, the swimmers and coaches are ready to get a head start on the upcoming season. The girls’ first meet is the County at Logansport on November 25 at 5:00. The boys’ first meet is December 12, at home against the Rochester Zebras. The Cass swimmers are working hard to be prepared in order to have a long, successful season. Let’s go Kings!
